Magemen Limited is seeking a highly skilled and fast-paced Intermediate Back-End Developer to join our agency team. In this role, you will be the driving force behind the engine powering our clients' digital storefronts, specializing in server-side architecture, custom integrations, and e-commerce platform back-ends. Working closely with Front-End Developers, Business Analysts, and Solutions Architects, your primary focus will be designing robust APIs, managing data pipelines, and building seamless integrations across various e-commerce platforms.
Remote (Must reside in the Auckland Region)
Key Responsibilities
-
API & Service Architecture: Design, build, and maintain robust, scalable RESTful and GraphQL APIs, microservices, and server-side business logic.
-
E-Commerce Backend & Integrations: Develop custom backend services, private apps, and webhook integrations across major platforms (e.g., Shopify Storefront/Admin APIs, Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce), handling checkout flows, inventory syncing, and ERP/CRM connections.
-
Data Modeling & Database Management: Architect, optimize, and manage relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB), ensuring data integrity, high query performance, and reliable caching strategies.
-
AI-Accelerated Workflow: Leverage AI coding assistants (e.g., Claude, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) daily to generate boilerplate services, write comprehensive unit and integration tests, debug complex logic, and accelerate feature delivery.
-
Headless & Modern Server Runtimes: Build high-performance backend layers and serverless functions using Node.js, TypeScript, Go, or Python to power headless commerce engines and dynamic applications.
-
Performance, Scalability & Security: Optimize server throughput, database latency, and concurrent traffic handling while implementing robust security standards, including OAuth, data encryption, rate limiting, and role-based access control (RBAC).
-
DevOps, Collaboration & Quality Assurance: Partner with front-end engineers to define clear API contracts, maintain CI/CD deployment pipelines, manage containerized environments (Docker), and conduct rigorous code reviews and automated testing before production releases.
Qualifications & Skills
-
Experience: 1+ years of professional back-end web development experience, with a dedicated focus on e-commerce platforms (Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce).
-
API & System Design: Proven ability to architect, implement, and consume robust RESTful and GraphQL APIs, webhooks, and third-party service integrations.
-
Core Back-End Technologies: Deep proficiency in server-side languages and runtimes such as Node.js/TypeScript, PHP, or Python, along with solid fundamentals in object-oriented and modular programming.
-
Database & Data Management: Hands-on experience with relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL), query optimization, indexing, and caching layers (Redis, Memcached).
-
E-Commerce Platform Expertise:
-
Strong hands-on experience extending Shopify via Admin & Storefront APIs, custom apps, webhooks, and headless setups.
-
Proven ability to build, customize, and maintain back-end logic, modules, and plugins for platforms like WooCommerce, Magento, or BigCommerce.
-
-
Architecture & Headless Integration: Solid understanding of decoupled/headless commerce architectures, serverless functions, and connecting back-end data pipelines to front-end consumers.
-
AI Workflow Proficiency: Required experience utilizing AI coding assistants (e.g., Cursor, Claude, GitHub Copilot) to generate boilerplate logic, write unit tests, debug server-side issues, and maximize daily output.
-
DevOps & Version Control: Proficiency with Git, containerization (Docker), CI/CD pipelines, and cloud hosting/deployment environments (AWS, GCP, or platform-native PaaS).
