Casual Laboratory Technician
Road Science is New Zealand's leading designer and supplier of bitumen and bitumen-based products. We have world-class manufacturing plants and storage facilities for bitumen, emulsions, and polymer-modified binders. Road Science has five IANZ-accredited civil engineering laboratories, and a number of project-specific mobile laboratories. We're looking for a casual Laboratory Technician to support our Christchurch-based Road Science team when laboratory workloads increase. If you are motivated and technical minded, enjoy practical work, exposure to diverse tasks and take pride in getting the details right, we'd like to hear from you.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, you'll provide technical and quality support through laboratory and site testing of construction materials, including soils, aggregates and asphalt. You'll follow documented test methods, relevant standards and customer specifications, helping maintain the laboratory's quality assurance system and IANZ accreditation requirements, including ISO/IEC 17025. This is a casual opportunity to support periods of increased laboratory activity, rather than a regular rostered position. Work will be offered as needed, with timing and availability discussed when support is required. Alongside laboratory testing, the role may include field testing with our operational teams. Some work may take place on weekends, supporting our asphalt teams with on-site testing. Flexibility to be available for these hours is advantageous.
Important Skills
- A Full NZ Class 1 driver's licence
- Prior experience in the contracting industry or a laboratory environment testing aggregates, soils, bitumen or asphalt, or equivalent experience would be an advantage, but full training would be provided.
- A strong commitment to safe working practices, including identifying and reporting hazards
- Good attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate testing paperwork and records
- The ability to follow testing procedures and record results accurately
- Good communication skills and a team-focused approach
Why you will enjoy working here
You'll work alongside our Road Science laboratory team to check the quality of materials used on our roads. You will be fully trained and supported in order to provide reliable, accurate results for our operational teams and customers.
