Stonemason

Employer: Tahuna Stone Limited (trading as Tahuna Stone)

Location: Queenstown-Lakes, Otago. Work is carried out on residential and commercial sites in the Queenstown area.

Employment type: Permanent, full-time

Hours: Minimum 30 hours per week guaranteed. The standard week is 40 hours, Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturdays as required (maximum 50 hours per week).

Pay: $30.00 to $32.00 per hour, depending on experience and skills

About us

Tahuna Stone has been building in stone in Queenstown since 2014. We work on architectural residential homes and commercial projects, from large multi-year jobs to small ones, and we specialise in Central Otago schist. We focus on quality work and a good working culture.

The role

We are looking for experienced stonemasons to join our team. Key tasks and responsibilities include:

• studying plans and specifications to determine the materials required, dimensions and installation methods;
• selecting, cutting, shaping and dressing stone using hand and power tools;
• laying Central Otago schist, including tight stack, bagged, 40mm cut schist and full-bed 200mm cladding;
• building stone walls, including stacked retaining walls, and laying schist paving;
• spreading mortar, setting stone, checking vertical and horizontal alignment and finishing joints;
• repairing and maintaining stone structures;
• erecting and dismantling restricted-height scaffolding;
• working safely and keeping sites tidy, in line with health and safety procedures; and
• travelling between sites in the Queenstown area as required.

What you need

• At least three years of relevant experience as a stonemason
• The ability to read and interpret plans and drawings
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality
• Physically fit and able to lift heavy materials and work outdoors
• Good communication skills
• Availability to work Saturdays
