Company introduction

Tai Ping Newmarket, operated by MARIE LIMITED, is an Asian grocery supermarket in Auckland, New Zealand. We offer fresh produce, meat, seafood, Asian groceries, snacks, beverages, frozen foods and everyday essentials at competitive prices. Serving diverse local communities, we aim to bring authentic Asian flavours and convenient shopping. We are expanding our online retail and delivery services and establishing a new in‑house direct import business to complement our existing supermarket retail operations.

About this role

We are seeking an Import Manager to establish and operate our new in‑house direct import business, which will complement our existing supermarket retail operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying overseas sourcing opportunities, building overseas supplier networks, negotiating purchasing agreements, and coordinating end‑to‑end import operations — from initial supplier sourcing through to delivery of goods to our stores and warehouse.

Main duties of this role:

  • Research overseas markets to identify imported and global shopping product lines that match customer demand and our store range, and assess market trends, pricing and commercial viability.
  • Prepare and carry out the import business plan, including target product categories, source countries, supplier shortlist, budgets and launch timelines.
  • Source and qualify overseas manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors, and maintain ongoing relationships with them to secure dependable supply.
  • Compare supplier quotations and product specifications, negotiate prices, payment terms and delivery conditions, and finalise supply agreements.
  • Develop import order‑planning frameworks aligned with stock levels and sales forecasts, and track trial and formal import shipments from order placement to delivery to store or warehouse.
  • Work with freight forwarders, customs brokers and logistics providers to arrange shipping, including temperature-controlled transport where required, and resolve delays or shipment issues.
  • Ensure imported food products comply with applicable New Zealand import requirements, biosecurity regulations, food safety standards and labelling rules, by checking import permits, shipping records, customs declarations and supplier documentation.
  • Track landed costs, supplier on-time performance and stock availability, and adjust ordering and supplier arrangements to control costs and avoid stock-outs.
  • Coordinate with relevant internal teams on the introduction of imported products, and review product demand and purchasing performance to refine sourcing and import plans.

  • Strong commercial, negotiation, communication and organisational skills, with the ability to manage overseas supplier relationships and coordinate import activities.
