Enterprise Architect

Here at BNZ, it's about more than just banking. We work together in an agile, energising environment to create innovative solutions through our promise "If you can imagine a better future, let's find a way."

We support wellbeing, flexible working and have a generous leave offering. There is the opportunity for growth, learning and career development. No two days are the same.

We are looking for an experienced Enterprise Architect to join our Tech Strategy & Architecture team.

Shape BNZ's payments architecture, connecting business strategy with practical delivery across people, processes, information, and technology.

This is an Auckland based hybrid role with three days in the office and two where you can work flexibly.

About the role

We sat down with the People Leader (who you would report to), who let us know the following about the role:

Responsibilities for this role include:

  • Setting target states and transition roadmaps for domestic and international payments, merchant services, and open banking.
  • Bringing an industry-wide perspective to BNZ's payments strategy and architecture, anticipating regulatory and industry change, aligning with emerging standards and initiatives, and helping BNZ influence the future direction of the payments ecosystem.
  • Guiding integration across payment platforms, channels, customer and merchant records, core banking, ledgers, and external providers.
  • Defining reusable patterns for APIs, events, messaging, and batch processing, with data ownership, privacy controls, duplicate prevention, and safe retries.
  • Defining availability, performance, observability, and tested failover and recovery requirements across bank, scheme, and third-party services.
  • Partnering with specialists on identity, consents, and authorities, including mandates, delegated access, approval controls, and auditable revocation.
  • Leading modernisation, migration, and decommissioning decisions, balancing customer value, cost, technical debt, and resilience. Exploring emerging capabilities through controlled experimentation.
  • Coaching architects and delivery teams, providing design assurance, and escalating material risks and exceptions through agreed governance.
  • Following legislative, policy, and health and safety requirements, completing required training, and reporting risks, hazards, and incidents.

We value collaboration, constructive challenge, and clear decisions across business, technology, operations, and risk.

What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?

Improving how customers and merchants move money through practical modernisation and new payment choices.

  • Strategic and enterprise-wide thinking.
  • Analytical problem-solving and sound judgement.
  • Collaborative leadership and influence.
  • Clear communication with business and technical audiences.
