Maintain and repair North-West Auckland wastewater pump stations to ensure reliability

Mechanical Technician

We're looking for an experienced Mechanical Technician to join our Water team based in Albany/Henderson, working across wastewater pump stations and associated network assets throughout North-West Auckland. This is a hands-on mechanical role where you'll maintain, repair and fault-find critical wastewater infrastructure. From planned maintenance to urgent fault response, your work will help keep essential wastewater services operating safely and reliably for Auckland communities.

Working within an operational wastewater environment, you'll be responsible for the planned and reactive mechanical maintenance, repair and fault-finding of pump stations and associated network assets across North-West Auckland. You'll respond to faults, troubleshoot mechanical issues and help keep critical wastewater infrastructure operating safely and reliably. Your day-to-day work will include:

  • Completing planned and reactive mechanical maintenance
  • Diagnosing and repairing pumps, equipment and associated assets
  • Responding to wastewater network faults and service requests
  • Identifying practical solutions to recurring mechanical issues
  • Working safely within wastewater and confined-space environments
  • Participating in the standby and callout roster, including incident response when required

You'll also maintain accurate job records and work closely with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and the wider operational team. Based across our Albany/Henderson depots, you'll work across the North-West Auckland pump station network as part of an experienced field team.

Ideally, you'll bring:

  • An NZQF Level 4 qualification in a relevant mechanical field, or at least three years' relevant experience
  • Hands-on experience in mechanical maintenance, fault-finding and repairs
  • Experience with pumps, pump stations, industrial equipment or water/wastewater assets
  • A full Class 1 New Zealand driver licence
  • A strong understanding of health and safety, including working in operational wastewater environments
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and getting the job done safely and efficiently
  • Confined-space, hazard-awareness or Hiab training would be advantageous.

At Downer, we plan, create and sustain the infrastructure that connects people and communities. Our Water team works behind the scenes to maintain the essential water and wastewater services New Zealanders rely on every day. You'll join a practical and supportive team where:

  • Your mechanical skills contribute to an essential public service
  • You'll work across a varied network of wastewater assets
  • No two days are exactly the same
  • Safety, quality and teamwork come first
  • Your experience and ideas will be valued
  • You can build your capability within a large infrastructure organisation
