We are seeking reliable and experienced Diesel Motor Mechanics to join our team. The successful candidates will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel engines, as well as the mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems of diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. This includes tasks such as troubleshooting faults, performing preventative maintenance, overhauling components, and ensuring vehicles and machines operate safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities:

  • Expert Diagnostics: Accurately diagnosing complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults in diesel engines and associated systems using advanced diagnostic equipment and your extensive knowledge.
  • Precision Repairs and Maintenance: Performing high-quality repairs, servicing, and preventative maintenance on a wide range of diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, adhering to manufacturer specifications and industry best practices. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Engine overhauls and repairs
    • Transmission and driveline servicing and repairs
    • Brake system diagnosis and repair (including air brakes)
    • Hydraulic system troubleshooting and repair
    • Electrical and electronic system diagnostics and repair
    • Steering and suspension system maintenance and repair
    • Cooling system service and repair
    • Fuel system diagnosis and repair
  • Component Overhauls and Reconditioning: Skillfully overhauling and reconditioning engines, transmissions, and other major components to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Welding and Fabrication: Performing basic welding and fabrication tasks as required for repairs and modifications.
  • Accurate Record Keeping: Maintaining detailed and accurate service records, documenting all work performed, parts used, and time allocated.
  • Adherence to Safety Regulations: Ensuring all work is carried out in strict compliance with health and safety regulations and company policies to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Effective Communication: Communicating clearly and professionally with workshop supervisors, other team members, and occasionally with drivers or operators regarding vehicle issues and repair recommendations.
  • Continuous Improvement: Staying up-to-date with the latest technological advancements, repair techniques, and industry standards through ongoing training and professional development.

 

Requirements and Skills:

  • Proven Experience: A minimum of three years of experience as a Diesel Motor Mechanic working on heavy-duty diesel vehicles and/or equipment, OR
  • Relevant Qualifications: A recognised trade qualification in Diesel Mechanics or Heavy Automotive Engineering (e.g., Level 4 or higher NZ Certificate in Heavy Automotive Engineering or equivalent).
  • Exceptional Diagnostic Abilities: Demonstrated expertise in diagnosing complex faults using a variety of diagnostic tools, software, and logical troubleshooting techniques.
  • Comprehensive Technical Knowledge: A thorough understanding of diesel engine operation, fuel systems, electrical and electronic systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, transmissions, braking systems, and other related components in heavy vehicles and equipment.
  • Strong Practical Skills: The ability to perform high-quality repairs, maintenance, and overhauls efficiently and effectively.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: A logical and methodical approach to identifying and resolving mechanical and technical issues.
  • Attention to Detail: A commitment to accuracy and precision in all aspects of your work.
  • Safety-First Mindset: A strong commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace.
  • Excellent Communication and Interpersonal Skills: The ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors.
  • A Valid Driver's Licence: A full and clean New Zealand driver's licence (or the ability to obtain one). A Heavy Vehicle licence Class 2 or higher is advantageous.
  • Your Own Tools: While the workshop is well-equipped, having your own set of quality tools is generally expected in the trade.
  • Random Drug Tests: Be willing to undergo random drug tests while employed.
  • Work Eligibility: Must be a NZ Citizen, a NZ Resident or eligible to work in NZ.

 

The successful applicants will also have the opportunity to work in different locations (Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, Manawatu-Whanganui, Wellington, Nelson-Tasman, Marlborough, West Coast, Canterbury, Otago and Southland), providing a unique chance to explore New Zealand's diverse regions.

 

This is a full-time permanent role, and the hourly pay rate is between NZ$28 and NZ$45, depending on experience. The work hours are from 30 hours minimum to 70 hours maximum per week, and they are to be worked between Monday and Friday between 7 am and 5 pm. They may be required to work on weekends.
