Westland Mining is expanding, and we’re seeking four experienced Mechanical Engineering Technicians to maintain and repair our heavy machinery and mining equipment. This role is crucial in ensuring the smooth operation of our mining site by minimizing downtime and improving equipment efficiency.
As a Mechanical Engineering Technician, you will be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a range of mining machinery, including excavators, crushers, conveyors, drilling rigs, and hydraulic systems. You will work closely with the maintenance and engineering teams to ensure that all mechanical systems operate safely and efficiently.
Responsibilities:
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical faults in excavators, loaders, haul trucks, and other mining equipment.
- Repair and replace defective components, including bearings, gears, belts, hydraulic pumps, and motors.
- Perform welding, fabrication, and machining tasks as required.
- Conduct scheduled maintenance checks to prevent unexpected failures.
- Identify wear and tear issues and recommend solutions to minimize downtime.
- Ensure proper lubrication, fluid levels, and part replacements to extend equipment lifespan.
- Maintain a log of completed maintenance tasks and upcoming service requirements.
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic circuits, pumps, cylinders, and control valves.
- Service air compressors and pneumatic systems used in mining operations.
- Identify leaks, pressure issues, and malfunctions to ensure optimal system performance.
- Assist in assembling, installing, and upgrading mechanical equipment and components.
- Work with engineers to enhance machine performance and efficiency.
- Implement modifications and upgrades to meet production demands.
- Conduct risk assessments before performing repairs or maintenance tasks.
- Maintain detailed records of maintenance, repairs, and inspections.
- Report on equipment performance and recommend improvements.
Requirements:
- At least 2 years of relevant work experience OR
- Relevant qualification at NZQA Level 4 or higher
- Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills
- Commitment to workplace safety and team collaboration
- Ability to work flexible hours and in all weather conditions
