We're expanding our farm in Whataroa. We're looking for 5 dairy farm assistants to work in South Westland. We operate a very calm and positive environment for our team. Good stockmanship is essential; the well-being of the herd is our primary purpose. We also want workers who have an eye for detail around the farm; gates, crops, pasture maintenance; care and attention to the machinery, the processes for effluent and waste control and management.

Tasks Include:
Livestock Handling:
*Good stockmanship and stock sense
*Never push cows too hard or fast down cow lanes (avoid lameness)
*Patience and perseverance with calf rearing
*Ensure animal welfare at all times
*Treat lame cows competently
Punctuality:
*Ensure punctual for milkings and getting cows to shed
*Ensure lunch and other breaks are not extended without prior arrangement
Milk Harvesting:
*Maintain calmness when handling cows (no hitting cows)
*Control backing gates for good cow fl ow
*Milk cows out properly (don’t be in too much hurry to get out of theshed)
*Ensure all cows are teat sprayed
*Identify clinical mastitis and other ill-health cow problems
*Identify and draft out lame cows
Shed Hygiene:
*Follow correct plant/silo cleaning procedures
*Check and fi ll teat sprayer before milkings
*Identify air leaks and/or rubberware problems
*Keep wall and fl oors of dairy clean
*Keep dairy surrounds tidy and free of personal rubbish
Pasture/Herd Management:
*Carry out farm walks regularly
*Observe residual feed levels (try to have post grazing around 1700)
*Shift cows on or hold back to maintain agreed post grazing levels
*Keep grazing plan up to date so other farm workers know where cowsare at all times
Machinery/Vehicle Use:
*Competent use of motorbiles and tractors
*Competent shift ing of OCMUS irrigation guns and long lateral sprinkles
*Treat motorbike with respect (no excessive speed and sliding)
*Treat tractors with respect (adjust speed to suit environment)
*Identify mechanical failure and stop before further damage occurs
*Extreme care while using or crossing Council roads and respect other traffic
*Reduce speed around farm houses (watch out for children and minimize noise)
Machinery/Vehicle Maintenance:
*Follow maintenance schedules as detailed under Special Accountabilities
*Show willingness to clean down machinery/vehicles
Occupational Health and Safety:
*Identify and report possible farm hazards
*use correct safety gear as required
*correct and safe use of ATV’s and tractors

Communication:
*Communicate effectively with employer
*Communicate effectively with co-workers
*Show co-operation and respect towards employer
*Show co-operation and respect toward co-workers
Responsibility:
*Complete given tasks unsupervised
*Complete given tasks in efficient manor
General Farm Practices:
*Show consideration to owners of lease block (redue noise when close to house and
respect their farm property)
*Treat gates/fences and other farm property with respect and care
*Maintain a high standard of care and cleanliness of farm cottages and surroundings
Special Accountabilites:
*Herd and pasture manangement with consultation with Senior herd manager and
Employer
*Staff supervision when employer and Senior Herd Manager are not on farm
*General maintenance (ensure greased and cleaned as permaintenance schedule)
*Tractor maintenance (ensure greased and cleaned as per maintenances chedule)
*Ensure shed records (TQM and animal health records) are kept up to date

  • This will be a full time permanent role guaranteed minimum of 30hrs per week ,
    maximum of 50hours per week, $29.66 - $32 per hour depending on experience.
  • A $200 accommodation allowance is included.
    The usual rostered time off work will be: 3 days per 9 days


Requirements, any one of the following:

  • 1 year of relevant work experience
  • a Level 2 Certificate in dairy training in NZ or overseas 
  • or No qualification if the work experience is met

NZ Citizenship/NZ residency or a valid NZ work visa, Police certificate required, recent drug test, full and clean driver's license and must have the right attitude to perform the tasks required.
