We are one of the leading Asian food import companies and we have a retail supermarket dedicated to providing high-quality Asian products and services to New Zealand’s multicultural communities. Due to business expansion, we are seeking an experienced professional with expertise in retail management and Asian market dynamics to oversee store operations, sales strategy development, and team leadership.
Located in Christchurch.
Key Responsibilities
1. Oversee Product Range, Stock & Service
Select and oversee the organising of our unique Asian product mix, manage inventory levels (including best-before date monitoring and strategic markdowns for short-dated/slow-moving items), and maintain excellent customer service standards for both wholesale and retail customers. Be aware of customer requirements and current Asian food trends, to liaise with the import department about which items to purchase from overseas.
2. Drive Sales Growth & Marketing
Develop and implement effective purchasing plans with local suppliers, set competitive prices, create regular promotions, and regularly refresh displays, highlighting new arrivals and products on promotion. Actively use your knowledge of Asian foods to increase sales through in-store marketing and personalized customer communication.
3. Build Customer Relationships & Provide Expertise
Engage directly with customers (retail shoppers and wholesale accounts), advise them on suitable Asian products, identify new sales opportunities (including potential client visits), handle quotes and orders accurately, and ensure complete customer satisfaction by resolving inquiries and issues promptly. Grow strong, lasting relationships with local and NZ-wide clients.
4. Manage Store Operations & Finances
Maintain accurate records of daily sales, stock movements, and financial transactions. Prepare end-of-day sales reports for the owner. Contribute to budgeting and overall store financial performance.
5. Lead & Develop the Team
Take charge of recruiting, training, supervising, and motivating our retail staff to ensure an efficient, organised and customer-focused team.
6. Ensure Safety & Compliance
All public areas are clean, organized, and safe for customers and staff. Monitor shop equipment and arrange repairs as needed. Adhere to all New Zealand Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
7. Maintain Smooth Daily Functioning
Supervise the accurate processing of customer orders and payments. Coordinate effectively with the sales admin team for order fulfilment and delivery.
Essential Requirements - All criteria below must be met
*Qualifications - Level 7 or higher in Marketing, Business Management, or a related field.
*Experience- Minimum 2 years work experience, and at least 1 year in Asian food retail management experience.
*Be honest, work well with others
*Ability to communicate clearly in English both oral and written.
It will be a bonus if you:
*Can communicate in a South East Asian or Chinese language – especially Mandarin
*Are reasonably fit and can lift heavy weights if required.
*Love cooking and eating authentic Chinese, Asian food
*Have proficiency in using Cin 7, Excel, Xero
*Are skilled in creating effective marketing materials.
