As a privately owned New Zealand based business John Jones Steel brings more
than 60 years of intergenerational experience to be one of the largest and most
advanced Structural Steel fabricators in the country.
John Jones Steel have bases in Christchurch and Timaru and we operate mainly in
the South Island and have the ability to undertake projects of any magnitude. We
have worked on some significant projects such as Otago School of Medicine,
Parakiore Sports Complex Christchurch, Queenstown Gondola, Dunedin Outpatients
and University of Canterbury to name a few.
About You:
We're looking for a candidate with at least 2 years of experience in estimating, ideally
within the structural steel sector. You’ll have a solid understanding of construction
drawings, engineering specifications, and manufacturing methods, along with
proficiency in industry-standard estimating software such as Strumis, Costcon or
similar. A sharp eye for detail, strong numerical accuracy, and excellent time
management skills are essential.
Key Areas of this position:
• Prepare detailed tenders/estimates and submissions.
• Review contract documentation, drawings, specifications, and tender
documents.
• Estimate labour, plant and material requirements.
• Ensuring measurements are in line with industry standards.
• Developing tender documentation that is clear and detailed.
• Prepare budgets for projects.
• Analyse project post-mortems and efficiencies.
• Develop reports/requirements for purchasing/local procurement.
• Liaise with engineer, detailers, contracts team, project managers to ensure
constructability and cost-efficiency.
• Maintain strong relationships with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors.
• Monitor and update cost databases and estimating tools.
• Supporting contract administration QS team.
About You
• A key understanding of the NZS3910 suite of contracts, including variation
assessment and issuing instructions.
• You should hold a relevant qualification in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Engineering or Design.
• Experience in Modelling software for creation of 3D concept models (advantageous).
• Your happy to work with already developed practices/processes.
