The role is a permanent position in a kitchen located inside an internet cafe, with a minimum of 30 hours per week scheduled across any day from Monday to Sunday depending on kitchen needs. Work patterns will vary and may change at short notice. Due to the nature of the business, employees will be required to work on most weekends and public holidays as part of normal duties. Flexibility is essential, as requests for time off during busy periods may not be accommodated.

Skills, qualifications, and experience:

  • Tertiary qualification in cookery at level 4 or higher equivalent to a New Zealand qualification;

  • Or have at least 1 year relevant experience working at kitchen.

  • Has professional cookery technique to produce high quality dishes.

  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills to effectively liaise with both suppliers and team members;

  • Excellent time management skills.

  • Physically well to work under pressure during peak meal time.

  • Follow all hygiene and Health and Safety regulations 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Prepare and cook all food items listed on the menu to required standards, often under time pressure during peak hours.

  • Closely monitor the quality of every dish and frequently liaise with the manager regarding any food preparation issues or last-minute changes.

  • Carry out detailed food preparation tasks, including portioning, seasoning, and adding gravies, sauces, and garnishes, ensuring accuracy for every single order.

  • Prepare meals for guests with a wide range of special dietary requirements, sometimes with very short notice.

  • Work with the manager on menu planning, often adjusting to seasonal ingredient availability and changing customer preferences.

  • Place orders for food supplies, checking each delivery to ensure it meets quality standards, and dealing with any supplier issues promptly.

  • Maintain stock control, regularly checking and adjusting stock levels to meet the kitchen’s operational needs without interruptions.

  • Train other kitchen staff to meet the restaurant’s required standards, while monitoring their performance on an ongoing basis.

  • Manage and maintain the kitchen and staff to ensure smooth operation during busy and unpredictable service periods.

  • Keep the working area consistently clean and tidy, strictly following all health and safety procedures, even during high-demand service times.
