Aoraki Mt Cook Guiding Co Ltd have a position for a skilled glacier kayaking guide and Glacier Hiking assistant with a minimum of 60 days of glacier kayaking experience with ice bergs and glacier ice safety knowledge. Our Glacier operation is unique and operates in the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park. We operate on the glacier lakes and glaciers where there are ice bergs and many other glacier ice features.
The position is a great opportunity for an experienced glacier kayaking and ice guide. The job is based out of headquarters at 3 Larch Grove Aoraki Mount Cook
The job starts in mid January 2026 to 23 April. During adverse conditions when guiding is not possible then the applicant will be expected to work in the office area promoting the activities supplied and other work related to maintaining the office and guiding business infrastructure. We are looking for solid work ethics and a keen and enthusiastic attitude.
Job Description
1. Health and Safety of clients, self and guides is the first priority. As per all company policies.
2. Keeping all bookwork up to date and in order and completing reconciliations after every day’s activities as per the working book and directed by the Owner or Director.
3. Collecting all monies from clients and other agencies as required before/after each trip.
4. Make sure all paper work is properly documented after every trip.
5. To assist in training any new guides to the highest standards of safety if applicable.
6. Maintain work vehicles and make sure their roadworthiness. Wash vehicles every operational day if necessary.
7. Clean inside of work vehicles every day.
8. Maintain hiking gear, sea kayaks and safety equipment to full operational performance. Regular maintenance required by guide.
9. Maintain other equipment used in the operation i.e. life jackets, boats, covers, crampons, boots etc.
10. Maintain walking track to the glacier lakes if requested to do so by the Director.
11. Carry and turn on radio and cellphone at all times when on duty. Radio and cell phone must be charged at all times.
12. All work to be logged in an orderly manner as per company policy.
13. Glacier lake and glacier conditions are to be monitored and noted and logged every operational day.
14. Vehicles and boats of any kind are ONLY to be used for the purpose of work as approved by the director of AMCG. Absolutely NO PRIVATE USE.
15. Vehicles are to be locked and parked outside The Old Mountaineers Café every day after business or designated area approved by the Director.
16. Office area to be kept tidy and filing cabinet/files to be kept in order.
17. The guide will research and study information about glaciers and hazards associated with glaciers and active glacier lakes and cold-water injuries and be familiar with the safety plans for Glacier Kayaking and Southern Alps Guiding.
18. The guide will, in their own time, maintain their skill level as a Glacier Heli Hike and Glacier Kayak and Trekking Guide. All hours of work are to be logged by guide and signed off by Charlie Hobbs of AMCG or SAG or their representative.
19. The guide shall complete a time sheet daily of work done.
20. Guide is to sweep, clean and tidy front porch and entrance daily and café sign-in area every operational day as directed. Check bathrooms are clean for clients.
21. Safety Boat and kayak procedures to be studied and well drilled if necessary.
22. Safety Boat only to be used in emergencies and its use approved by the owner/Director.

24. Safety Boat log to be completed before and after use if applicable.
25. Safety Boat and kayaks to be checked after each use. i.e. Fuel, oil, damage etc. Full inspection.
26. Duties as required at The Old Mountaineers Café and other duties as required from time to time.
27. Be familiar with Skiplane and Helicopter safety for glacier boat maintenance and Heli Hiking and other guiding duties if required.
28. Assist Heli Hiking operation as required. This can be transporting, aircraft loading, gearing up clients or assisting to guide/assist clients.
29. All duties to be carried out in accordance with company policies and health and safety guidelines.
30. Maintain crops through regular weeding, pruning, thinning, and trellising tasks to ensure optimal growth.
31. Undertake invasive species control on farmland to protect crops and native flora, including but not limited to the removal of Pinus contorta (Contorta pine), Pseudotsuga menziesii (Douglas fir), Pinus radiata (Radiata pine), Pinus ponderosa (Ponderosa pine), Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine), Pinus muricata (Bishop pine), Pinus pinaster (Maritime pine), Pinus nigra (Corsican pine), Pinus mugo (Dwarf mountain pine), and Larix decidua (European larch). Other invasive species control activities to be directed by AMCG management..
32. Carry out irrigation tasks as directed, including laying irrigation lines and monitoring water systems.
33. Conduct pest and disease control measures as directed, including application of approved treatments under supervision.
34. Operate basic equipment such as wheelbarrows, pruners, clippers, ladders, and other manual tools as directed by AMCG management.
35. Operate motorised equipment such as weed eaters, chainsaws, utility vehicles, and other equipment as directed by AMCG management.
36. Conduct landscaping activities to maintain AMCG lands, including mowing, trimming, planting, clearing debris, and other tasks as directed by AMCG management.
37. Assist with general upkeep of work areas including all grounds, garages, sheds, maintaining cleanliness and safe access.
38. Comply with all hygiene and biosecurity procedures required in the horticultural industry work environment.
39. Wear appropriate PPE at all times while on duty and follow all site-specific safety protocols.
40. Maintain respectful and professional conduct on-site with team members, supervisors, and other personnel.
41. Perform other related duties as directed by the AMCG supervisor or property owner within the scope of required work.
Pay rates are between $29 - $31per hour with a minimum of 30 hours per week.
