The Role

We are seeking an experienced Financial Controller to lead and strengthen our financial management function. This is a senior, hands-on role suited to a strategic finance professional who can combine strong technical accounting capability with leadership, governance, and operational insight in a project-based environment. Reporting directly to the Directors, the Financial Controller will play a key role in supporting business growth, improving financial systems, and ensuring robust financial governance across all construction projects.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Strategy

  • Provide strategic financial leadership to support business planning, growth, and long-term sustainability
  • Act as a trusted financial advisor to Directors and senior management
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance analysis across multiple construction projects

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Oversee end-to-end financial operations, including management accounting, statutory reporting, and compliance
  • Prepare accurate monthly management reports, cashflow forecasts, and project profitability analysis
  • Ensure strong cost control, margin analysis, and financial risk management

Budgeting, Cost Control & Project Finance

  • Develop and manage project budgets, cost tracking, and variance analysis
  • Monitor project financial performance, including WIP, revenue recognition, and cost allocations
  • Support project managers with financial insights to improve decision-making

Systems, Process & Digital Transformation

  • Lead the development and optimisation of financial systems, reporting tools, and internal controls
  • Drive continuous improvement in financial processes, automation, and data accuracy
  • Support digital finance initiatives to enhance efficiency and transparency

Governance, Compliance & Stakeholder Management

  • Ensure compliance with New Zealand accounting standards, tax obligations, and regulatory requirements
  • Manage external relationships with auditors, accountants, banks, and advisors
  • Strengthen internal financial policies, procedures, and governance frameworks

Team Leadership

  • Responsible to lead, train, mentor, and develop accounting & finance staff
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement

Qualifications & Expertise

  • Bachelor Degree or above in Accounting, Finance, Statistics, or a related discipline
  • Extensive senior-level experience in financial management, budgeting, and governance
  • Strong technical knowledge of management accounting, cost accounting, and financial control
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex budgets, large organisations, or multi-project environments
  • Strong analytical capability with a data-driven approach to financial decision-making
  • Experience in financial systems development, digital finance, or process improvement
  • Excellent communication skills, teaching or mentoring experience in account and finance field will be an asset.
