This is a full-time permanent position, at least 30 hours work per week is
guarenteed.

ROLE PURPOSE:
The Excavator Operator is a key member of the on-site operational team. This role is responsible for the safe, skilled, and efficient operation of excavators and other heavy machinery to ensure the successful and timely completion of Lester Civil and Drainage's civil and drainage projects, while upholding the highest standards of safety and quality.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Machine Operation

  • Safely and proficiently operate a range of excavators (e.g., 1.5 to 30 tonnes) for tasks including bulk excavation, trenching, backfilling, and final trim work.
  • Precisely follow site plans, surveyor markings, and laser levels to ensure all work is completed to specification.
  • Expertly conduct trenching for services such as stormwater and wastewater, including digging around live services with extreme care.
  • Load trucks efficiently and safely.

Maintenance & Checks

  • Conduct thorough daily pre-start checks and inspections on all allocated machinery.
  • Perform routine operator-level maintenance, including greasing, fluid checks, and cleaning of tracks/cabs.
  • Promptly report any mechanical faults, damage, or maintenance requirements to the Site Supervisor.

Health & Safety

  • Strictly adhere to all company health and safety policies and procedures, and the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA) 2015.
  • Actively participate in site inductions, toolbox talks, and hazard identification.
  • Ensure the work area is safe before, during, and after operations.

Teamwork & Communication:

  • Work collaboratively and communicate clearly with the Site Supervisor, ground crew, drainlayers, and other team members to ensure smooth site operations.
  • Assist ground crew with other site-based tasks when not operating machinery, as directed by the supervisor.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least three years of relevant experience. Alternatively, a relevant level 4 or above qualification is required.
  • Good physical stamina and strength to handle heavy materials and work outdoors.
  • Strong attention to detail and a hard-working attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Understanding of New Zealand building codes and safety regulations is an advantage.
