We are a newly established horticultural business based in Waihi, specialising in avocado orchard management and fruit production.
The company focuses on the long-term development of high-quality, export-grade fruit, produced in accordance with NZGAP, GlobalG.A.P., and packhouse compliance standards.
Avocado production is the company’s core activity, with additional orchard management activities undertaken for other fruit crops on a supplementary basis as the business grows.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Fruit Grower / Orchard Manager to oversee day-to-day orchard operations, primarily focused on avocado production, with involvement in other fruit orchards where required.
This is a hands-on role responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising all aspects of fruit growing operations, from orchard establishment and crop management through to harvest and post-harvest coordination, and you will need to work 30-40 hours per week, between Monday to Sunday.
Key Responsibilities
• Plan, organize, and supervise orchard activities of fruit crops.
• Manage irrigation, fertiliser, spray, and pest/disease control programmes
• Monitor orchard health, tree performance, and crop development
• Coordinate harvesting activities and liaise with packhouses to meet export quality requirements
• Ensure compliance with NZGAP, GlobalG.A.P., and relevant biosecurity and food safety standards
• Maintain accurate orchard records and production data
• Supervise and train seasonal workers and contractors, ensuring health and safety compliance
• Respond to weather events (frost, wind, heavy rain) to minimise crop loss and protect production
What We’re Looking For
• 5+ years’ experience in managing fruit crops.
• Understanding of Zespri and export-grade standards is a bonus.
• Excellent leadership, planning, and record-keeping skills.
• Flexible approach – availability outside standard hours when needed.
• Must reside in or near Waihi for on-site management.
Preferred Attributes
• Fluency in Mandarin and Taiwanese for liaison with overseas partners.
• Awareness of vegetarian / plant-based farming ethos and sustainability values.
• Passion for long-term orchard development and fruit-growing innovation.
