The Upholstery Machinist / Furniture Fabric Technician is responsible for operating industrial sewing and fabric-processing machinery to produce high-quality upholstered furniture components. The role involves precise stitching, fabric handling, incorporation of basic design elements into upholstery, quality inspection, and routine machine maintenance to ensure finished furniture products meet company and industry standards.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Operate industrial sewing machines used in furniture manufacturing, including threading machines, inserting bobbins, and positioning fabric and upholstery components for sewing.

Start, stop, and control machine speed using pedals and knee levers to coordinate the actions of presser feet, fabric guides, blades, and other attachments.

Guide fabric and upholstery materials accurately under needles, following marked patterns, seams, edges, and design specifications.

Change needles and adjust, secure, or modify machine attachments to suit different fabrics, padding materials, and upholstery designs.

Apply basic fabric design elements such as decorative stitching, patterned seams, piping, welting, tufting, or panel alignment in accordance with furniture design requirements.

Ensure fabric patterns, textures, and colours are correctly aligned and visually consistent across furniture components.

Work from upholstery drawings, templates, or design instructions to achieve the intended aesthetic and functional outcome.

Finish upholstered components by trimming excess fabric, threads, and materials to ensure a clean and professional appearance.

Operate thread trimming and other non-sewing machines used in upholstery and furniture production.

Inspect stitching and finished upholstery for defects, inconsistencies, or damage, and report machine malfunctions or quality issues to supervisors or maintenance staff.

Perform basic machine maintenance, including lubrication and routine cleaning, to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Assist with laying up, bundling, and organising cut or sewn upholstery components for assembly.

Ticket, label, and prepare finished upholstery items for further processing or furniture assembly.
Skills and Experience
- A relevant qualification or a Bachelors in Arts, Fashion, Design is a requirement for the role.
- 3 years of relevant experience may substitute the qualification requirements for this role.

Experience operating industrial sewing or upholstery machines will be preferred.

Good understanding of fabric handling, stitching techniques, and basic upholstery design elements is expected.
