Position Title: Fruit Production Leading Hand

Hours of Work: 30–40 hours per week

 

Key Requirements

  • Minimum Level 4 qualification or 2 years of experience.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead daily teams in pruning, thinning, bud rubbing, tipping, tying‑down, and canopy work.
  • Assist supervisors with planning and coordinating seasonal orchard activities.
  • Allocate work tasks and monitor team productivity and quality.
  • Operate orchard tools and equipment safely (secateurs, loppers, pole saws, ATVs if trained).
  • Train new staff in correct kiwifruit orchard techniques and safe work practices.
  • Support irrigation checks, vine training, and basic orchard maintenance.
  • Implement orchard hygiene and biosecurity standards.
  • Keep simple daily work records for team output and attendance.
  • Report pest/disease issues, vine health changes, and safety concerns.
  • Ensure careful handling of fruit and canopy to protect crop quality.

Key Requirements

  • Minimum Level 4 qualification or 2 years of experience.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise kiwifruit harvest crews (pickers and tractor/bin runners).
  • Allocate picking rows/blocks and brief crews on quality, targets, and safety.
  • Monitor pick quality, bin fill levels, defect removal, and maturity compliance.
  • Organise and oversee bin placement, swaps, and covered staging for load‑out.
  • Conduct in‑field QA checks to protect fruit grade and minimise defects.
  • Maintain accurate daily records of bin counts, crew output, reject levels, and block progression.
  • Enforce orchard traffic plans, ladder safety, PPE and hydration breaks.
  • Coordinate with orchard management and coolstores regarding harvest volumes and timings.
  • Provide coaching and corrective feedback to pickers as needed.
  • Identify weather risks (e.g., wet pick, heat) and implement safe work adjustments.

  • Lead seasonal programme delivery according to orchard plans.
  • Train staff in correct kiwifruit techniques and H&S compliance.
  • Oversee safe use and maintenance of orchard equipment and tools.
  • Maintain daily operational records (job logs, hours, productivity, observations).
  • Coordinate with management on resourcing, weather delays, and orchard priorities.
  • Conduct quality checks to protect fruit grade potential.
  • Support continuous improvement and cost‑effective orchard operations.

  • Lead small picking teams during daily harvest operations.
  • Issue picking gear, ladder checks, and ensure PPE compliance.
  • Conduct in‑row QA checks including bin fill level, defects, and contamination control.
  • Coordinate with tractor/bin runners for safe bin movements.
  • Provide coaching to pickers on correct technique and safe ladder use.
  • Maintain simple harvest data (bins per picker, rejects, delays).
  • Enforce orchard safety rules and protect fruit quality from bruising.
  • Set up rows for the next picking shift (bins, ladders, hydration stations).
  • Identify vine or crop issues and report to the Post Harvest Supervisor.
  • Assist with end‑of‑day cleanup and staging of bins for dispatch.
