Support the mechanical engineering and maintenance teams to ensure reliable, safe, and efficient operation of production machinery and plant equipment in a pet food manufacturing facility. Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain mechanical systems; assist with installations, upgrades, preventive maintenance programs, and continuous improvement projects.
Key responsibilities
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on mixers, extruders, conveyors, pelletizers, dryers, ovens, packaging machines, pumps, gearboxes, bearings, motors, and pneumatic/hydraulic systems.
- Diagnose mechanical failures using hand tools, precision measuring instruments, and test equipment; perform repairs and part replacement.
- Assist engineers with equipment installation, commissioning, alignment, balancing, and startup of new or modified machinery.
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, P&IDs, bills of materials, and vendor manuals.
- Fabricate, modify, and assemble mechanical parts and fixtures using common shop equipment (lathes, mills, grinders, welding, cutting).
- Support conveyor and material handling maintenance, including belt tracking, roller replacement, and drive alignment.
- Carry out routine lubrication, adjustment, and calibration of mechanical components and rotating equipment.
- Maintain accurate work orders, maintenance logs, spare-parts inventory records, and equipment history in CMMS.
- Participate in root-cause analysis and implement corrective actions to reduce downtime and improve equipment reliability.
- Support safety, GMP, and sanitation protocols specific to food processing (clean-in-place (CIP) awareness, allergen control, HACCP, etc.).
- Provide on-call or shift support as required for emergency repairs and weekend shutdowns.
- Train and mentor maintenance helpers and operators on basic mechanical troubleshooting and safe equipment operation.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor degree in mechanical technology, industrial maintenance, or related field — or equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience.
- 2+ years’ experience in industrial mechanical maintenance, preferably in food processing or other continuous-process manufacturing.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and experience with rotating equipment, gearboxes, bearings, couplings, belts/chains, and power transmission.
- Proficient with hand and power tools, welding (MIG/TIG/basic fabrication), precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers), and alignment tools.
- Familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, basic electrical skills (motor starters, sensors), and PLC-assisted machinery.
- Ability to read mechanical drawings, bill of materials, and maintenance manuals.
Skills and attributes
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication and teamwork; ability to work with production, QA, and engineering.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently and follow safety/GMP procedures.
Physical requirements and working conditions
- Work in a manufacturing environment with noise, dust, heat, and steam; use of PPE required.
- Frequent standing, climbing, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs regularly), and working in confined spaces or elevated platforms.
- Shift flexibility (day/evening/nights) and availability for emergency call-ins and planned shutdowns.
