We are a building materials supply and installation business based in Wellington. We supply and install flooring products, and we also undertake carpentry work related to decking and fencing projects. We are looking for a full-time carpenter to support our on-site installation services for residential and light commercial clients. Job Title: Carpenter (Flooring, Decking and Fencing)

Location: Wellington (with travel to client sites as required)

 

Employment Type: Full-time, permanent

 

Reporting to: Director

 

Hours of Work: Hours of Work: 35–45 hours per week (minimum 35 hours). Hours will be

rostered between Monday and Sunday, within the time window of 10:00am to 10:00pm.

 

Remuneration: NZD $24.00 – $32.00 per hour depending on your skills and experience level

Role Purpose
This role supports the company’s core business of supplying building materials and providing professional on-site installation services. The Carpenter (Flooring, Decking and Fencing) is responsible for site measurement, preparation, cutting, fitting and installation work for flooring projects, and also for decking and fencing jobs where required. The role requires solid practical carpentry skills, attention to detail, and the ability to deliver a safe, neat and durable finish on each job.

Key Responsibilities

·      Measure work areas on-site (flooring, decking, fencing), check site conditions, and confirm installation requirements with customers.

·      Read and follow product installation instructions and job specifications, and plan the work to avoid delays and rework.

·      Determine materials needed, prepare simple cutting/layout plans, and coordinate materials readiness with the operations team.

·      Prepare and check the base surface before installation, including basic checks for level/flatness and minor preparation work as required.

·      Cut, fit and install flooring products supplied by the company, ensuring accurate joins, correct spacing/allowances, and a professional finish.

·      Complete finishing work including skirting, trims/scotia, edge details, and clean transitions between different flooring areas.

·      Measure, cut and install flooring on stair areas where required, ensuring safe edges and neat finishing.

·      Install decking or fencing components as required, including accurate setting-out, cutting, fixing, and completing edges/joins for a tidy finish.

·      Solve common on-site issues (e.g., uneven surfaces, irregular edges, tricky transitions) and apply practical solutions to maintain quality and durability.

·      Carry out quality checks during and after installation to ensure work is secure, consistent, and completed to the required standard.

·      Maintain a tidy and safe worksite, protect customer property, and complete a clean handover at job completion.

·      Use hand and power tools safely, maintain tools/equipment in good working order, and follow all health and safety requirements.

·      Communicate clearly with customers and the internal team regarding progress, variations, and any issues, and guide installation assistants where required.

Key Skills and Experience

·       Minimum two years’ relevant experience in the construction industry OR

·       A certificate in Carpentry or Joinery

·       Preferably a mature, well-developed carpentry skill set, demonstrated through substantial on-site experience

·       Able to read and follow job specifications and installation instructions, and apply them on-site.

·       Good attention to detail and pride in producing neat, accurate finishing work.

·       Able to work independently, manage time effectively, and solve practical problems on-site.

·       Good communication skills and a customer-focused attitude.

Work Conditions

·       Primarily client-site based work. The role involves physical tasks such as lifting materials, kneeling, standing for extended periods, and using power tools.

·       Travel within the Wellington region may be required depending on job locations.
