Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Checkout and Online Department Manager to oversee and manage the checkout operations and online ordering department at Freshchoice Cromwell. This role is critical to ensuring smooth front-of-house operations, efficient online order fulfilment, and a high standard of customer service.

The successful candidate will take ownership of departmental performance, staff supervision, customer experience, and operational efficiency, while contributing to the overall success and profitability of the supermarket.

Key Responsibilities

1. Checkout & Online Operations Management

  • Plan, organise, and manage daily checkout and online department operations to ensure efficient workflow and minimal customer wait times.

  • Oversee online order processing, picking, packing, and dispatch to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and quality standards are met.

  • Monitor transaction volumes and online demand to ensure adequate staffing and resource allocation.

2. Customer Service & Sales

  • Establish and maintain high customer service standards across checkout and online platforms.

  • Handle customer enquiries, feedback, and complaints professionally and in line with company policies.

  • Ensure a positive shopping experience for in-store and online customers to encourage repeat business.

3. Staff Supervision & Rostering

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and support checkout and online department staff.

  • Prepare staff rosters in line with trading patterns, online demand, and budget requirements.

  • Monitor staff performance and provide coaching to maintain productivity and service excellence.

4. Financial & Administrative Management

  • Monitor departmental sales, labour costs, and expenditure to ensure alignment with budgeted targets.

  • Maintain accurate records of transactions, online orders, refunds, and departmental reports.

  • Assist senior management with forecasting, reporting, and operational planning.

5. Compliance & Health and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, health and safety requirements, and relevant retail legislation.

  • Maintain cash-handling procedures, loss-prevention measures, and internal control systems.

  • Ensure all online and checkout processes meet audit and operational standards.

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

As a Retail Manager, you will:

  • Hold a relevant Level 5 Diploma or higher qualificationor Have a minimum of 2–3 years’ experience in retail management, supermarket operations, or a closely related role.

  • Will prefer someone with LCQ certificate as you will also be required to deal with in-store and online liquor sales.

  • Demonstrate strong leadership, organisational, and customer service skills.

  • Have experience managing staff, rosters, budgets, and operational processes in a retail environment.
