Role Overview

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineering Technician to support our manufacturing operations, testing activities, and equipment optimisation.

This is a graduate-to-intermediate level engineering technician role requiring a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, with the ability to apply technical knowledge in a practical manufacturing and testing environment.

The role is suitable for candidates with a solid academic background and demonstrated technical capability, who are looking to develop their career in an applied engineering setting.

Key Responsibilities

Manufacturing & Process Support

· Assist in the operation and optimisation of manufacturing processes for composite building materials

· Support production workflow analysis and continuous improvement initiatives

· Monitor product quality and assist with process control

Mechanical Equipment Support

· Assist in installation, setup, and maintenance of mechanical equipment

· Conduct basic diagnostics and support troubleshooting under supervision

· Participate in preventative maintenance programmes

Testing & Engineering Support

· Assist with material, structural, and performance testing 

· Collect and record experimental data in a structured and accurate manner

· Support engineers in analysing results and preparing reports

Automation & Systems Exposure

· Support implementation of semi-automated or automated production systems 

· Assist with basic calibration and system checks

· Work alongside senior engineers on system improvements

· Enable robotics and AI in manufacturing and construction by designing, integrating, and optimising the physical systems that deliver precise, efficient, and reliable automated production and assembly. 

Documentation & Compliance

· Maintain accurate technical records and documentation

· Follow New Zealand health, safety, and engineering compliance requirements

 

Skills & Qualifications

Essential:

· Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline 

· Strong understanding of:

o Mechanics and materials

o Thermodynamics or fluid systems

o Engineering fundamentals

· Basic proficiency in:

o CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks or similar) 

o Engineering tools such as MATLAB or equivalent 

o Manufacturing & CAM: Mastercam, Fusion 360 (for toolpaths, CNC machining, and digital fabrication workflows)

o Robotics & Automation: ROS (Robot Operating System), ABB RobotStudio, FANUC ROBOGUIDE (for robot programming, simulation, and control)

o Programming & AI Integration: Python, C++ (for automation logic, AI integration, and data processing)

· Controls & PLC Systems: Siemens TIA Portal, Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 (for industrial automation and control systems)Ability to:

o Interpret technical drawings

o Apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings

o Learn quickly in a hands-on environment

 

Preferred

· Exposure to:

o Laboratory testing or research projects

o Manufacturing or production environments (internship/project level acceptable)

· Experience working on:

o Mechanical design projects

o Engineering research or academic presentations

· Strong communication skills in technical and team environments
