Role purpose:
The Calf Rearing Manager reports to the Farm Group Manager and oversees the feeding & care of approximately 2,400 dairy & beef replacement calves annually through to weaning. They lead and support the calf rearing team, ensure all animal welfare & MNF standards are met, drive continuous improvement of facilities, & work closely with the Dairy Support Manager to promote staff safety, performance, and long term business sustainability across all calf rearing operations and systems.
- Minimum 30 hours per week guaranteed.
- Rostered shifts, including early starts
- Hours may vary depending on seasonal workload and farm requirements
Applicants must have the following as per emloyer's requirement:
- 1 year experience or relevant level 4 qualification
- Applicants must be physically fit and willing to learn.
- Applicants must pass pre-employment drug test and have no criminal record.
- Must have a driver license.

Key Responsibilities
Planning & Budget - Key Tasks
- Monthly & seasonal requirements from the calf rearing plan are recorded & actioned.
- Rosters ensure all team members have their required time off.
- Team satisfaction survey shows ≥ 80% satisfaction with the manager.
Health and Safety
- Ensure all team members are fully trained and compliant with workplace health and safety procedures.
- Promote active participation in hazard identification and effective risk management practices
Environmental Management (Freshwater Farm Plan, Farm Environmental Plan)
- Ensure full compliance with all requirements of the Farm Environment Plan
- Actively identify, report, and help resolve environmental issues
- Maintain farm operations in full accordance with all Resource Consent conditions at all times
Calf Rearing Performance
- Calves are reared in line with Mid North Farm Ltd policies to rear healthy calves to weaning weights with a high standard of hygiene followed at all times.
- Colostrum and non saleable milk are collected from the supplier farms and managed to meet the calf rearing unit’s needs.
- Milk and other young stock feed shifts are minimised to avoid animal health issues.
Animal Health
- All calf transport between farm and calving unit is safe with minimum discomfort to the animals.
- All animal health records are kept and recorded into MINDA.
- No avoidable animal deaths.
- No calf develops naval or joint illness as a result of poor handling and care.
- All animal health / welfare issues are tracked and recorded.
Records and Reporting
- Timesheets and other employment related documents are completed on time.
