We are seeking an experienced and passionate Rowing Head Coach to lead our high school rowing programme on Auckland’s North Shore. This role is responsible for delivering a structured and progressive coaching programme for student-athletes, fostering both performance and participation, and supporting the overall development of rowing within the school. The position combines hands-on coaching with programme development. This is a full-time (40 hrs), permanent position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, and deliver structured rowing training programmes for secondary school students
  • Coach crews on-water and indoors, preparing athletes for regional and national regattas (including Maadi Cup)
  • Develop athlete pathways from novice to competitive level
  • Promote student participation and engagement in rowing within the school community
  • Supervise and support assistant coaches and student leaders
  • Monitor athlete performance, attendance, and wellbeing
  • Ensure strict adherence to water safety, health and safety, and school policies
  • Coordinate regatta entries, logistics, and training schedules
  • Liaise with school staff, parents, and rowing associations

Skills and Experience Required

  • Minimum of 2 years’ relevant rowing coaching experience
  • Relevant tertiary qualification is strongly preferred
  • Proven practical and technical knowledge of rowing techniques, training programmes, and athlete development
  • Experience working with youth or school-aged athletes highly desirable
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills
  • Ability to foster a positive, disciplined, and inclusive team culture
  • Current first aid certification (or willingness to obtain)

  • Ability to work early mornings, afternoons, and weekends during the rowing season
  • Commitment to student safety and wellbeing at all times
  • Clean driver’s licence (preferred)
