Position Summary
The Blocklayer / Bricklayer is responsible for laying bricks, concrete blocks, and other masonry materials to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, retaining walls, facades, and other structures in residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects. The role requires accuracy, workmanship, and compliance with workplace health and safety standards.
This is a full-time role with a minimum of 30 hours guaranteed each week.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Reading and interpreting construction plans, drawings, and specifications to determine layout and installation requirements.
Measuring and setting out brickwork and blockwork according to project plans and building standards.
Laying bricks, concrete blocks, pavers, and other masonry materials using mortar and specialised tools.
Constructing and repairing walls, retaining walls, chimneys, foundations, columns, arches, and other masonry structures.
Mixing mortar and other construction materials to the required consistency.
Checking vertical and horizontal alignment of structures using levels, lines, and other measuring tools.
Cutting and shaping bricks and blocks to fit around openings and structures using hand and power tools.
Installing damp-proofing materials, reinforcing steel, and flashings where required.
Repairing damaged brickwork, blockwork, and mortar joints.
Applying finishing techniques including pointing and joint finishing.
Erecting and dismantling scaffolding or working platforms where necessary.
Ensuring all work complies with NZ Building Code requirements, workplace safety regulations, and company quality standards.
Maintaining tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and clean condition.
Skills and Experience Required
Relevant qualification or 2–3 years of experience working in bricklaying or blocklaying within the construction industry.
Good understanding of masonry materials, methods, and construction practices.
Ability to read and interpret plans and technical drawings.
Strong attention to detail and finishing quality.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Good physical fitness and ability to perform manual handling tasks.
Knowledge of workplace health and safety practices in the construction industry.
