Position Summary:
We are seeking a versatile and hands-on Excavator Operator to join a steel fabrication and industrial installation business. This role combines excavator operation, plant and machinery installation support, and production engineering functions to improve operational efficiency across both workshop and site-based projects.
The successful candidate will be involved in equipment and plant installations, site preparation, machinery operation, process improvement initiatives to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.
- Minimum 30 hours per week guaranteed.
- Employee may occasionally be required to travel to other locations within the Waikato region.
Skills & Experience Required:
- Minimum 3 years' experience operating excavators and heavy machinery within industrial, construction, engineering, or manufacturing environments OR a level 4 qualification relevant to the industry.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and practical problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies advantageous.
- Strong understanding of Health & Safety requirements within engineering and production environments.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, plans, and technical specifications.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Qualifications:
- Full New Zealand Driver Licence.
- Wheels, Tracks and Rollers (WTR) endorsement required.
- Class 2, 4, or 5 licence advantageous.
- Site Safe Passport preferred.
- Forklift, EWP, Dogman, Rigging, or Crane qualifications advantageous.
- Relevant engineering, mechanical, manufacturing, or trade qualification beneficial.
- First Aid Certificate desirable.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Plant Installation & Machinery Operations:
- Operate excavators and other heavy machinery safely and efficiently to support plant, equipment, and structural steel installations.
- Carry out excavation, trenching, backfilling, site preparation, and earthworks associated with industrial projects.
- Assist with the lifting, positioning, and installation of machinery, fabricated steel components, and production equipment.
- Work closely with fabrication, installation, rigging, and project teams during equipment installations and site works.
- Conduct daily pre-start checks and basic maintenance of machinery and equipment.
- Identify and report equipment faults, maintenance requirements, and site hazards.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, site plans, and installation specifications.
- Monitor, analyse, and optimise production processes to improve efficiency, productivity, and quality.
- Provide hands-on engineering support to workshop and site teams to troubleshoot issues and minimise downtime as required.
- Develop and implement process improvements, automation opportunities, and cost-saving initiatives.
- Assist with the planning, installation, commissioning, and optimisation of new plant, machinery, and production equipment.
- Prepare and maintain process documentation, work instructions, SOPs, and technical reports.
- Liaise with suppliers, contractors, and service providers regarding engineering requirements, upgrades, and equipment procurement.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives throughout the business.
Health, Safety & Compliance:
- Promote and maintain a strong health and safety culture across workshop and site operations.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with company policies, site requirements, and relevant legislation.
- Participate in hazard identification, risk assessments, toolbox meetings, and safety initiatives.
- Support quality assurance processes and ensure work is completed to required standards.
- Assist in developing training materials and supporting the upskilling of workshop and production staff.
