Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Structural Steel Fabricator to join our growing team. This role is responsible for the fabrication, assembly, and preparation of structural steel components while also contributing to production efficiency, process improvement, and operational excellence across the workshop.
The successful candidate will combine strong fabrication skills with a proactive approach to problem-solving, quality control, and continuous improvement, helping to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards.
- Minimum 30 hours per week guaranteed.
- Employee may occasionally be required to travel to other locations within the Waikato region.
Skills & Experience Required:
- Minimum 3 years' experience in structural steel fabrication, manufacturing, engineering, or a related industry OR at least a level 4 qualification in relevant industry.
- Ability to read and interpret structural steel drawings and fabrication plans.
- Strong fabrication, fitting, and workshop skills.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities with a hands-on approach.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, continuous improvement, or operational excellence methodologies is advantageous.
- Strong understanding of quality assurance processes and workshop safety requirements.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively across multiple teams.
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced production environment.
Qualifications:
- Relevant trade qualification in Fabrication, Engineering, Boilermaking, or Metalwork preferred.
- Site Safe Passport advantageous.
- Forklift licence advantageous.
- EWP, Dogman, Rigging, or Crane qualifications beneficial.
- First Aid Certificate desirable.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Structural Steel Fabrication:
- Fabricate, assemble, and fit structural steel components in accordance with engineering drawings and specifications.
- Read and interpret workshop drawings, fabrication details, and technical plans.
- Operate fabrication equipment including saws, drills, punches, grinders, and other workshop machinery.
- Perform accurate measuring, marking, cutting, fitting, and assembly of steel components.
- Work closely with welding and installation teams to ensure quality and timely completion of projects.
- Inspect fabricated components to ensure compliance with project specifications and quality standards.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe work environment.
- Monitor, analyse, and contribute to the optimisation of production processes to improve output, reduce waste, and increase efficiency.
- Provide hands-on support to the production floor to troubleshoot fabrication and manufacturing issues and minimise downtime.
- Collaborate with design, detailing, and project teams to ensure manufacturability and efficient production of new projects.
- Assist in the development and implementation of process improvements, automation opportunities, and cost-saving initiatives.
- Support the planning, installation, commissioning, and integration of new workshop equipment and production machinery.
- Participate in root cause analysis and corrective actions for production-related issues.
- Prepare and maintain accurate fabrication records, process documentation, work instructions, and SOPs.
- Liaise with suppliers, contractors, and service providers regarding materials, equipment, and workshop improvements.
- Assist with the development of training materials and support the upskilling of production and fabrication staff.
Health, Safety & Compliance:
- Promote and maintain a strong health and safety culture throughout workshop operations.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, industry standards, and legislative requirements.
- Participate in hazard identification, toolbox meetings, risk assessments, and safety initiatives.
- Support quality assurance processes and ensure all fabricated products meet required standards.
- Report hazards, incidents, defects, and non-conformances in a timely manner.
