Responsibilities

  • Grinding, sanding, and cleaning surfaces of items to be painted.
  • Preparing surfaces by removing rust, scale, grease, and other contaminants.
  • Loading paint, oil, lacquer, varnish, and rustproofing agents into spray equipment.
  • Connecting hoses to spray equipment and adjusting spray nozzles to required pressure levels.
  • Securing items to be sprayed within spray booths or positioning them onto conveyors.
  • Operating abrasive blasting equipment to prepare metal and other surfaces for coating.
  • Directing spray guns to apply even and consistent coatings in accordance with specifications.
  • Monitoring coating thickness and finish quality.
  • Moving completed items to drying areas and stacking them for further painting, finishing, or packaging.
  • Starting and monitoring extractor fans, drying fans, and heaters.
  • Cleaning and maintaining spray-painting and blasting equipment, including nozzles, containers, and hoses.
  • Mixing coating solutions and regulating temperatures where required.
  • Operating paint dipping baths where applicable.
  • Conducting routine equipment checks and reporting faults or maintenance requirements.
  • Following all workplace health and safety procedures, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Maintaining a clean, organised, and safe work environment.
  • Working safely in confined spaces and at heights where required.
  • Collaborating effectively with supervisors and team members to meet project deadlines.

Requirements and Skills

  • NZQCF Level 4 qualification in a relevant trade or at least three years of relevant industrial spray painting and/or abrasive blasting experience.
  • Experience working with industrial coatings, protective coatings, or surface treatment systems.
  • Knowledge of surface preparation standards and coating application techniques.
  • Ability to safely operate spray-painting and blasting equipment.
  • Experience working in confined spaces within industrial, construction, manufacturing, marine, engineering, or heavy industrial environments.
  • Current Confined Space Entry certification/training is highly advantageous.
  • Current Working at Heights certification/training is highly advantageous.
  • Experience working under Permit to Work (PTW) systems and following confined space safety procedures.
  • Ability to use and understand gas monitoring equipment and ventilation systems where required.
  • Understanding of hazard identification, risk assessment, and emergency procedures associated with confined space work.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to interpret job specifications and work instructions.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform manual work in industrial environments.
  • Forklift licence is an advantage.
  • Site Safe passport is an advantage.
  • Valid driver's licence is an advantage.
  • Experience working in construction, manufacturing, engineering, marine, or industrial environments is advantageous.
  • Be willing to undergo random drug tests while employed.
  • Must be a NZ Citizen, NZ Resident, or otherwise legally entitled to work in New Zealand.

Employment Conditions

This is a full-time permanent role, and the hourly pay rate is between NZ$28 and NZ$35, depending on experience and qualifications.

The work hours are from 30 hours minimum to 70 hours maximum per week, worked between Monday and Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Applicants may also be required to work weekends to meet operational requirements.
