Waikato Badminton Association (WBA) is one of 24 regional associations throughout NZ and is affiliated to the sports national body, Badminton New Zealand. Our purpose is “Provide inclusive, enjoyable badminton experiences for all ages, all abilities, all times across the Waikato”.

 

Location: Eastlink Badminton Stadium Hamilton, travel throughout the Waikato Region when and where required

Work Type: Full-Time – 30 hours per week

Monday to Friday with flexible work hours to accommodate weekend work

(With flexibility to work more hours across the peak badminton season, all additional hours must be approved by the General Manager).

Remuneration: $60,060 annual salary

Purpose of the role: This position exists to ensure there growing opportunities for the community to participate in the sport of badminton throughout the Waikato region to enable the growth and opportunity to all members. A key responsibility will be to lead, manage and delivery of Waikato Badminton’s player development initiatives within the Waikato Region.

 

 To be suitable for this job, the candidates must have:

  • At least two years of experience in coaching badminton, or 2 years of participating in badminton at a national representative or elite level 
  • BWF (Badminton World Federation) Level 1 coaching certificate, or equivalent qualification  
  • At least 12 months’ experience in sports administration or sports organisation management 
  • A proven record of success in sports development and elite-level coaching

Ideal candidates will have (Preferred but not required)

  • 2 years or more of experience in coaching badminton, and a record of participation in badminton at elite level
  • BWF (Badminton World Federation) Level 2 coaching qualification or higher, or equivalent qualification
  • At least 2 years’ experience in sports administration or sports organisation management or a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, or Sports Management (Performance), or other relevant degree.

Other requirements

  • Must have NZ Drivers License or international equivalent; should be able to obtain a full NZ drivers license with ‘p’ endorsement within 1 year of starting job
  • Has no criminal background and can meet police vetting requirements for working with young people
  • Is fit and able for the job – can participate in badminton, actively coaching young people on a daily basis and demonstrating the skills required  

Key Responsibilities of the role:

  • Promote badminton and encourage community participation
  • Plan, deliver, and oversee structured sports development programmes that support skill progression and long‑term participation
  • Coach, train, and instruct players by analysing performance and developing individual and group abilities
  • Plan and supervise training sessions, fostering motivation, discipline, and positive sporting behaviours
  • Support the development of young people by providing safe, inclusive, and age‑appropriate sporting opportunities
  • Oversee participation of targeted and development groups within sport programmes
  • Coordinate and direct sporting activities, including training programmes, camps, clinics, and pathway initiatives
  • Plan and prepare players and teams for competition, including training focus, play strategies, and player readiness
  • Coordinate player and team participation in sporting competitions, including selection processes and competition logistics
  • Identify, recruit, and support players progressing through development and performance pathways
  • Support the recruitment and development of coaching personnel where required
  • Liaise with schools, clubs, sporting organisations, and officials to ensure compliance with rules, policies, and regulations
  • Monitor programme outcomes and participant progress to support continuous improvement
  • Maintain required coaching registration, licensing, and accreditation, and comply with safeguarding and police vetting obligations
