Key Responsibilities of the role to discuss during interview:
• Supervise and coordinate orchard workers carrying out fruit-production activities across assigned orchard blocks.
• Allocate daily duties to workers based on production schedules, orchard priorities, weather conditions and instructions from the Orchard Manager.
• Demonstrate correct work methods to orchard workers and provide practical guidance on required production standards.
• Monitor the quality, accuracy and productivity of work completed by orchard workers.
• Inspect completed work to ensure pruning, thinning, tying, picking and other production activities meet orchard specifications.
• Identify poor-quality, incomplete or incorrect work and require workers to correct it where necessary.
• Monitor worker attendance, punctuality, productivity and conduct during each shift.
• Maintain daily records of worker attendance, completed tasks, orchard blocks worked, production quantities and hours worked.
• Report daily progress, labour requirements, work quality and operational issues to the Orchard Manager or Director.
• Assist management with planning labour requirements for seasonal orchard activities.
• Organise workers into teams and assign team leaders where appropriate.
• Monitor the progress of work against production targets and completion deadlines.
• Ensure that workers understand daily instructions, orchard procedures and expected quality standards.
• Provide induction, task training and ongoing supervision to new and existing orchard workers.
• Monitor compliance with workplace health and safety requirements.
• Ensure workers use tools, ladders, picking equipment and personal protective equipment correctly and safely.
• Identify and report hazards, unsafe practices, damaged equipment and orchard-access issues.
• Conduct or assist with daily toolbox meetings and safety briefings.
• Monitor weather and orchard conditions and report any conditions that may affect worker safety, fruit quality or production.
• Check that orchard tools and equipment are available, fit for use and returned after each shift.
• Report damaged, missing or unsafe tools and equipment to management.
• Assist with monitoring irrigation lines, water flow and visible faults and report any issues requiring repair.
• Observe vines and fruit for signs of disease, pest activity, damage, poor growth or other production concerns and report these to management.
• Supervise fruit picking to ensure fruit is handled carefully and harvested in accordance with maturity, quality and hygiene requirements.
• Ensure bins, picking bags, equipment and orchard access areas are used and maintained appropriately.
• Coordinate with contractors, team leaders and other supervisors where several work teams are operating on the orchard.
• Assist in resolving minor worker issues and refer serious employment, disciplinary or performance matters to management.
• Ensure orchard areas are left clean and orderly at the completion of work.
• Assist with hands-on orchard duties where reasonably necessary to demonstrate techniques, support the team or meet urgent production requirements.
• Carry out other reasonable supervisory duties related to fruit production and orchard operations.
