Offering a competitive rate of $28–$35 per hour with 30 to 60 hours guaranteed weekly, this role is a fantastic opportunity to work alongside qualified tradespeople, reading plans, bending rebar, and assembling critical structural frameworks.
About the Role
We are seeking a motivated and reliable Steel Fixer to join our team in Southland. This role offers an excellent mix of variety and steady workflow, assisting our qualified tradespeople with interpreting plans, cutting and bending rebar, and assembling reinforcing steel frameworks across both commercial developments and residential sites. This is a great opportunity for a proactive individual looking to gain hands-on experience, expand their skills, and contribute to a high-performing trade team.
What You'll Be Doing
- Erecting lifting tackles by attaching pulleys and blocks to fixed overhead structures, and installing cables and attaching counterweights
- Attaching slinging gear to hoisting equipment and objects to be moved using clamps, hooks, bolts and knots
- Fitting and bolting tubes, support braces and components to form bases and build up scaffolding
- Lifting and positioning sections of scaffolding
- measuring, cutting, bending and fitting welded wire mesh into concrete areas to be mesh-reinforced
- fixing mesh and reinforcing steel into position in formwork for concrete pours
- setting up winches and rigging equipment to raise and position girders, plates, columns and other steel units
- erecting guard rails, guy wires, ropes and clears, laying planks and hanging safety nets
- Positions and secures steel bars and steel mesh in concrete forms to reinforce concrete structures. Registration or licensing may be required.
What We're Looking For
- Minimum 2 years’ of relevant experience or a Level 3 or Level 4 relevant qualification.
- A genuine interest in the steel fixing trade with a strong willingness to learn, take direction, and master the craft.
- Basic understanding of trade tools (pliers, rebar cutters, benders, grinders), layouts, and site safety protocols.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively as part of a team.
- High attention to detail, strong spatial awareness, and good problem-solving skills.
- Physically fit and comfortable with heavy lifting, bending, and kneeling for extended periods.
- Reliable, punctual, and a "safety first" attitude.
