About JAICO Ltd

Based in Timaru, JAICO Ltd is a successful New Zealand company operating deepwater fishing trawlers out of South Island ports, including Timaru and Dunedin.  The company’s three vessels catch and process fish at sea, regularly unloading frozen seafood for export into cold-storage facilities ashore.

They are seeking an experienced and commercially minded Finance Manager to join their Timaru-based team. This is a pivotal senior role, offering the opportunity to lead the company’s financial function while supporting operational and strategic decision-making.

Working closely with the senior leadership team, you will play a key role in ensuring strong financial performance, robust compliance, and high-quality reporting across a dynamic, export-focused business.

 

About the Finance Manager role

This is a hands-on senior finance position responsible for the overall financial management of the business. You will oversee all accounting, reporting, and compliance functions, while providing insight and guidance to support ongoing growth and operational success.

You will also manage one direct report to ensure finance processes are accurate, efficient, and aligned with best practice.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all financial management and reporting activities, including monthly management accounts and annual financial statements
  • Create and manage budgets, forecasting, and variance analysis to support informed decision-making
  • Provide financial analysis and insights to support operational performance, including contract and export-related activities
  • Maintain and enhance financial systems, controls, and procedures
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of all tax and statutory obligations (GST, PAYE, FBT, RWT, NRWT, Provisional Tax)
  • Oversee accounts payable, receivable, and cashflow processes
  • Oversee and ensure accurate, timely payroll processes
  • Liaise with external accountants, auditors, and key stakeholders
  • Support compliance requirements, including government reporting and export documentation

 

About You

You will be a qualified accountant with strong commercial acumen and the ability to operate both strategically and in a hands-on capacity. Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Recognised accounting qualification with at least 5 years’ relevant experience in commercial accounting environments
  • Proven experience in financial management, reporting, and statutory compliance
  • Strong knowledge of New Zealand tax obligations
  • In-depth experience with Xero and payroll systems (iPayroll preferred)
  • Ability to interpret financial data and communicate insights clearly to non-financial stakeholders
  • High level of accuracy, organisation, and attention to detail
  • Experience within a primary industry, maritime, or export-focused business is advantageous
  • Comfortable working in a culturally diverse environment
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Leadership experience
