Dairy Herd Manager – Kamo, Northland
We are seeking a reliable and experienced Dairy Herd Manager to join our farming team based in Kamo, Northland. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who is confident in the day-to-day operation of a dairy farm and is able to support and train junior staff where required.
This is a full-time permanent role with a minimum guarantee of 40 hours per week. The pay rate for this position is $33.00 to $35.00 per hour, depending on skills and experience.
The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting with the efficient running of the dairy, including milking, animal health, effluent management, feeding, calf rearing, mating support, and general farm maintenance. You will be expected to help ensure the farm dairy is kept clean and hygienic, milk harvesting is carried out safely and correctly, and animal health treatments and events are accurately recorded.
Key duties include carrying out milking and milk quality procedures, identifying and assisting with the treatment of common animal health issues, supporting calving and calf rearing, recognising cows on heat, assisting with mating processes, managing pasture and supplements, operating and maintaining farm machinery and vehicles, setting up and maintaining fencing, assisting with irrigation and effluent systems, and following all farm health, safety, environmental and biosecurity procedures.
The role will require good communication with the farm owner or manager, the ability to prioritise daily tasks, and a willingness to contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the farm.
Applicants must have either a relevant tertiary diploma or bachelor’s qualification in agriculture, dairy farming, animal science or a related field, or at least 2–3 years of relevant dairy farming experience. The ideal applicant will have strong practical dairy farming skills, good animal handling ability, an understanding of milk quality and animal welfare requirements, and the ability to work safely and efficiently in a busy farm environment.
Applicants must be physically fit, reliable, punctual, able to work early mornings, weekends and rostered hours as required, and willing to follow workplace procedures and instructions. A positive attitude, good time management, attention to detail and the ability to work well in a small farm environment are essential.
