The Role
We are looking for a Mechanical Engineering Technician to support the operation, testing and optimisation of our stone fabrication equipment, mechanical systems and manufacturing processes. Working closely with the production team, you will apply mechanical engineering knowledge to improve manufacturing efficiency, maintain equipment performance and reliability, and ensure high product quality standards for customised stone projects.
This is a permanent, full-time position based in Auckland, with 40–45 hours of work per week.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide engineering technical support for the installation, commissioning, testing, adjustment and ongoing operation of stone fabrication machinery and associated mechanical systems.
- Assemble, install, align, test and commission new or modified mechanical assemblies, machinery components, machine tools, controls and associated pneumatic or hydraulic systems.
- Conduct operational and performance testing of CNC cutting, shaping, polishing, edge-processing and material-handling machinery to assess mechanical performance, operating accuracy, reliability and production capability.
- Collect and analyse machinery performance data, equipment operating information and test results, carry out relevant technical calculations, and prepare reports, records and diagrams documenting the findings.
- Inspect machinery and mechanical systems, investigate mechanical faults, equipment failures and recurring operating issues, identify probable causes and recommend appropriate corrective action in accordance with technical specifications.
- Interpret engineering drawings, machinery layouts, equipment manuals and technical specifications, and undertake measurements and calculations required for machinery installation, alignment, testing and modification.
- Select and evaluate appropriate machinery, mechanical components, tools and equipment required for stone fabrication operations, machinery installations and equipment improvement work.
- Assess machinery capacity, component and material quantities, installation requirements and equipment compatibility for proposed fabrication projects, machinery upgrades and production changes.
- Organise and coordinate machinery inspections, preventive maintenance, servicing and repair activities, monitor maintenance outcomes and maintain accurate equipment and maintenance records.
- Assist with machinery upgrades, production-line modifications and mechanical improvement projects designed to improve equipment reliability, operating accuracy, workplace safety and production efficiency.
- Liaise with machinery manufacturers, equipment suppliers and external technical specialists to obtain technical information, resolve mechanical issues and support the installation, servicing or modification of specialised equipment.
- Ensure that machinery installations, mechanical modifications, testing activities and completed technical work comply with engineering specifications, manufacturer requirements, company quality standards and applicable workplace health and safety requirements.
Skills & Experience
- A Level 7 or above qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology or a closely related engineering discipline OR At least three years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering, manufacturing or production engineering.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, mechanical systems, production operations and quality control.
- Ability to use engineering software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively with production, design and project teams in a manufacturing environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in stone fabrication, engineered stone manufacturing, natural stone processing, construction materials manufacturing or precision fabrication will be an advantage but is not essential.
