POSITION PURPOSE
The Carpenter is responsible for undertaking a broad range of carpentry, construction and maintenance activities across the Sequal Lumber site. The role supports capital projects, maintenance work, building repairs and construction activities, ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
Working alongside the Maintenance Team and contractors, the Carpenter contributes to maintaining and improving Sequal's facilities and infrastructure while supporting operational requirements across the business.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Carpentry and Construction
- Carry out both rough and finishing carpentry work.
- Construct, install and repair timber structures, walls, floors, roofs, partitions and other building components.
- Install timber framing, wall linings, GIB® plasterboard, cabinetry, doors, windows and finishing products.
- Construct and install timber structures for operational improvements and capital projects.
- Complete building maintenance, repairs and alterations throughout the site.
- Ensure all work complies with New Zealand Building Code requirements and company standards.
Site Maintenance
- Maintain buildings, offices, lunchrooms, workshops and site infrastructure.
- Repair damaged timber structures and fittings.
- Assist with preventative maintenance programmes involving buildings and facilities.
- Support shutdowns and capital improvement projects as required.
- Assist other maintenance trades during planned maintenance activities.
Planning and Project Support
- Read and accurately interpret construction drawings, plans and technical specifications.
- Measure, calculate and estimate material quantities required for projects.
- Prepare work areas and organise materials for efficient project completion.
- Liaise with supervisors and other trades to coordinate work activities.
- Identify practical solutions to construction and maintenance issues.
Tools and Equipment
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools and woodworking equipment.
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working order.
- Report damaged or faulty equipment promptly.
- Ensure tools are stored safely and securely after use.
Health, Safety and Environmental Responsibilities

- Comply with all Health, Safety and Environmental policies and procedures.
- Participate in hazard identification and risk management activities.
- Complete Take 5s, permits and other safety documentation as required.

KEY SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential
- 3 years Carpentry experience or relevant roles
- Extensive experience in commercial, industrial or residential carpentry.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and technical specifications.
- Experience with rough and finishing carpentry.
- Competent using hand tools, power tools and woodworking equipment.
- Excellent measuring and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- High level of attention to detail.
- Physically fit and capable of undertaking manual work.
- Full New Zealand Driver Licence (or ability to obtain).
Desirable
- Experience working in an industrial manufacturing or sawmill environment.
- Experience working with maintenance teams.
- Forklift licence.
- Elevated Work Platform (EWP) certification.
- Working at Heights certification.
- First Aid Certificate.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires the ability to:
- Lift and carry building materials safely.
- Work at heights where required.
- Climb ladders and access platforms.
- Bend, kneel, crouch and stand for extended periods.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Undertake physically demanding manual tasks safely.
