Senior Cloud Platform Engineer
At IAG, we're ready for you. We're the largest general insurance group in Australia and New Zealand. Our family of brands turns the IAG purpose of making your world a safer place into action by helping everyday Aussies and New Zealanders, supporting their ambitions and making insurance accessible.
Join us as a Senior Cloud Platform Engineer and help build the future of IAG's engineering platform.
We run IAG's multi-cloud estate across AWS, GCP and Azure, supporting insurance operations in Australia and New Zealand under APRA and RBNZ obligations. We are building this out into a self-service platform with golden paths and guardrails. Foundations are in place; the platform layer is what we are hiring for.
A key focus of this role is evolving our GCP estate as we migrate workloads from an end-of-life on-premises container platform to Cloud Run. You'll help build and enhance the cloud foundations these workloads rely on, including networking, identity, security, observability and reusable platform patterns, while contributing to a unified Enterprise Cloud Platform across GCP and AWS.
In this role, you'll work hands on with our strategic vendors, uplift IAG's engineering community and shape the experience layer that brings the platform to life. This is a permanent full-time role based in multiple locations in Auckland, Melbourne or Sydney.
What You'll Do
- Build self-service platform capabilities (GKE, Cloud Run, EKS) using Terraform, GitOps, and day 2 operational automation.
- Contribute to BAU platform operations, including triaging and resolving support requests from engineering teams, incident response, and continuous improvement work alongside greenfield delivery.
- Enhance GCP foundations, including networking, hybrid connectivity, workload identity, secrets management and observability.
- Develop and maintain golden-path Terraform modules, with standards enforced at deploy time.
- Develop and enhance IAG's IDP, including service catalogues, templates, and golden paths that lift engineering productivity and experience.
- Create platform guardrails & policy as code that enable fast delivery while maintaining reliability, security, and compliance.
- Design observability and operational tooling, improving platform reliability and enabling strong on call support patterns. OpenTelemetry exposure is highly valued.
- Support workload migration to Cloud Run and uplift cloud security through Wiz and CNAPP capabilities.
- Work closely with strategic vendors (Google, Wiz, AWS and others), embedding into delivery teams and sharing knowledge back into IAG via pairing, learning hours, and lightweight communities of practice.
- Influence platform direction, challenging approaches with data driven insights and supporting solution governance as part of IAG's engineering ways of working.
- Participate in a rotating on-call roster, responding to platform incidents out of hours and contributing to PIRs to drive reliability improvements
What You'll Bring
- 3–5+ years' experience building cloud infrastructure with GCP and/or AWS, and strong platform product thinking.
- Experience building cloud foundations, including networking, identity, observability and security controls.
- Experience in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), Kubernetes, containers, GitOps and CI/CD (GitHub Actions).
- Exposure to Cloud Run, OpenTelemetry and modern platform engineering practices is highly desirable.
- Ability to work confidently with vendors and cross-functional teams, engaging internal customers and communicating clearly.
- Understanding of modern software engineering practices and microservices architectures, and how developers build and ship services.
- You pair solid engineering judgement with action — moving work forward, communicating clearly, and avoiding analysis paralysis.
- You help others grow — sharing knowledge, pairing, and building a strong learning culture as we transition from vendor-led to in-house capability.
- Nice to have: Backstage, TypeScript, Crossplane, ArgoCD, Wiz, and observability tools (e.g., New Relic, Splunk); FinOps experience is a plus.
