Pay range: $30.00 to $40.00 per hour, depending on skills, relevant experience and qualifications

About the role

HC Contracting Limited is a New Zealand construction company operating across the Canterbury region. We are looking for experienced carpenters to join our on-site teams working on residential and light commercial building projects.

This is a permanent, full-time position based in Christchurch, with travel to job sites throughout the wider Canterbury region. Company vehicles are provided for site travel where required.

Key tasks and responsibilities

As a Carpenter with HC Contracting Limited, you will:

•    Read and interpret plans, drawings and specifications to work out the materials needed, the dimensions to work to, and the correct installation methods

•    Order and select timber and other building materials, and set out layouts on site

•    Measure, cut and shape timber and other materials, then assemble and fix the cut parts into position

•    Erect wall framing and roof framing, lay sub-floors and flooring, and check that structures are square, level and true

•    Fix fascia boards, sheath roofs, and install exterior wall cladding along with door and window frames

•    Assemble prepared timber components into structures and fittings ready for installation

•    Cut and form timber joints

•    Construct concrete formwork, including boxing, bracing and stripping

•    Carry out repairs, renovations and alterations to existing structures and fittings

•    Work with materials such as plywood, wallboard, plastic laminates and sheet metals as required by the job

•    Operate and maintain hand and power tools safely, and keep the work area tidy

•    Follow all site health and safety requirements, including safe work at heights, and take part in site inductions and toolbox meetings

•    Travel between job sites across the Canterbury region as required

Minimum requirements

To be considered for this role you must have:

•    A minimum of 2 years' relevant work experience as a carpenter, or a New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification in carpentry (or an equivalent overseas qualification)

•    The ability to read and work from building plans and specifications

•    Competence in the safe use of carpentry hand tools and power tools

•    A good standard of physical fitness, and the ability to work outdoors and at heights

•    A current full New Zealand driver licence (or an overseas licence able to be converted), as travel between Canterbury job sites is part of the role

•    A Site Safe Construction Passport, or willingness to obtain one — we will support you to complete this

•    The legal right to work in New Zealand, or eligibility to obtain a work visa

Pay and conditions

•    Pay range: $30.00 to $40.00 per hour. Your starting rate within this range will be based on your relevant experience, qualifications and demonstrated skills. This range reflects the current market rate for carpenters in the Canterbury region.

•    Guaranteed hours: a minimum of 30 guaranteed hours per week, Monday to Friday. Additional hours are usually available depending on workload, but are not guaranteed.
