Position Purpose

The Timber Machinist is responsible for operating and maintaining timber-processing and woodworking machinery to cut, shape, dress, mould and finish timber products to required specifications. The role requires a strong focus on accuracy, quality, workplace safety and production efficiency.

The Timber Machinist will work from production plans, drawings, measurements and specifications and will ensure finished timber products meet required quality standards and customer requirements.

  • Minimum 30 hours per week guaranteed.

Key Responsibilities:

Timber Machining and Production

  • Operate a range of woodworking and timber-processing machinery safely and efficiently.
  • Set up and adjust machinery according to production requirements and specifications.
  • Cut, shape, dress, mould, plane and finish timber products.
  • Read and interpret production plans, drawings, measurements and job specifications.
  • Select appropriate timber, tooling, blades and machine settings for each job.
  • Measure and inspect timber before, during and after machining to ensure accuracy.
  • Identify and correct machining faults, defects and quality issues.
  • Complete production work within required timeframes and productivity targets.
  • Maintain consistent quality across finished products.

Machinery and Equipment

  • Operate machinery such as saws, planers, moulders, routers, spindle moulders, thicknessers and other woodworking equipment as required.
  • Carry out routine machine adjustments, cleaning and basic maintenance.
  • Check machinery, guards and safety equipment before operation.
  • Report mechanical faults, damaged equipment or maintenance requirements promptly.
  • Ensure cutting tools, blades and other equipment are maintained and suitable for use.
  • Assist with machinery changeovers and tooling adjustments.

Quality Control

  • Check finished products against drawings, specifications and measurements.
  • Identify timber defects and machining imperfections.
  • Ensure products are produced to required tolerances and quality standards.
  • Separate, repair or report defective products where required.
  • Maintain accurate production and quality records.

Workplace Health and Safety

  • Follow all company health and safety procedures and safe operating practices.
  • Correctly use personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain a clean, organised and hazard-free work area.
  • Follow safe procedures when operating machinery, handling timber and changing tooling.
  • Report hazards, incidents, near misses and unsafe equipment to management.
  • Participate in workplace safety meetings and training.

General Duties

  • Handle and move timber and finished products safely.
  • Assist with packing, stacking and preparation of completed products for dispatch where required.
  • Work cooperatively with other production and workshop staff.
  • Assist with general workshop duties as required.
  • Maintain a reliable and consistent attendance record.
  • Follow reasonable instructions from supervisors and managers.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of production processes and workplace efficiency.
