Design and optimize electronics hardware for portable MRI systems

Electronics Engineer

We are seeking a practical and experienced Electronics Engineer to design, implement, test, and verify printed circuit board assemblies for advanced medical technology products.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team led by senior technical staff, the successful candidate will take approved system and hardware architectures and translate them into robust, manufacturable PCBAs. The role will involve detailed circuit design, schematic capture, PCB layout, prototype bring-up, debugging, verification, and support through design transfer.

The position may be appointed at either a mid or senior level depending on the candidate's depth of experience, ability to work independently, and capability to deliver complex board designs with limited supervision.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience designing PCBAs from defined architectures and requirements through to tested and verified hardware.
  • Strong proficiency with Altium Designer.
  • Demonstrated experience completing both schematic capture and PCB layout.
  • Strong understanding of digital electronics and microcontroller- or processor-based systems.
  • Practical experience with low-voltage DC power supplies, regulation, power distribution, filtering, and protection.
  • Experience designing common embedded interfaces such as SPI, I²C, UART, USB, CAN, Ethernet, GPIO, and similar interfaces.
  • Strong understanding of grounding, decoupling, filtering, return paths, signal integrity, power integrity, thermal considerations, and electromagnetic compatibility.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with board bring-up, debugging, fault-finding, and verification testing.
  • Ability to produce clear schematics, PCB layouts, bills of materials, design calculations, test procedures, and technical reports.
  • Ability to work independently on defined board-development activities while operating effectively within a broader engineering team.
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to design and testing.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience developing electronics within a regulated industry such as medical devices, aerospace, automotive, defence, or industrial safety systems.
  • Familiarity with medical-device quality and risk-management standards, including:
    • ISO 13485
    • ISO 14971
    • IEC 60601
    • IEC 62304
  • Experience working within formal design-control, document-control, configuration-management, and engineering-change processes.
  • Experience conducting or contributing to Design FMEA, fault-tree analysis, or similar structured risk-analysis activities.
  • Embedded software capability at bare-metal, RTOS, or embedded Linux level.
  • Experience developing device drivers, board-support packages, diagnostic firmware, or production-test software.
  • RF circuit-design or RF integration experience.
  • Experience with antennas, RF modules, matching networks, wireless communications, or RF test equipment.
  • Experience supporting EMC design and formal EMC testing.
  • Experience with low-noise analogue circuitry, sensor interfaces, signal conditioning, or data-acquisition systems.
  • Experience designing battery-powered equipment, battery interfaces, charging systems, or power-monitoring circuitry.
  • Experience supporting PCB fabrication, assembly, prototype manufacture, production test, and design transfer.
  • Familiarity with requirements-management, product-lifecycle-management, or issue-tracking tools.

Level Expectations

Mid-Level Electronics Engineer

A mid-level engineer will be expected to independently complete defined PCBA designs from approved architecture and requirements, including schematic capture, PCB layout, bring-up, debugging, and verification. They may require guidance on more complex technical decisions, risk assessments, or cross-system trade-offs.

Senior Electronics Engineer

A senior engineer will be expected to independently deliver complex PCBAs with limited supervision, resolve difficult technical issues, contribute strongly to design reviews and risk-management activities, and provide technical guidance to less-experienced engineers. The role remains part of a team led by senior technical staff and does not carry primary responsibility for overall system architecture.

Personal Attributes

  • Practical, hands-on, and comfortable working directly with hardware.
  • Able to translate established architectures and requirements into reliable detailed designs.
  • Takes ownership of assigned designs through implementation, testing, and verification.
  • Works methodically and maintains high-quality design documentation.
  • Communicates technical risks, issues, and trade-offs clearly.
  • Collaborates effectively with electronics, embedded software, mechanical, systems, quality, regulatory, and manufacturing teams.
  • Balances technical performance, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and schedule.
  • Demonstrates sound engineering judgement, curiosity, and attention to detail.

Soft Skills Requirements

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good communication and collaboration skills
  • Willingness to learn and continuously develop technical expertise
  • Professionalism, reliability, and attention to detail
