Trainee Line Mechanic
Join Downer as a Trainee Line Mechanic and gain the skills, experience, and nationally recognised qualifications needed to become a qualified Line Mechanic. The opportunity is for someone who is motivated, hands-on, and keen to build a long-term career in the electricity distribution sector. We'd welcome applications from qualified Electricians or Tradespeople, looking to retrain in a reliable skillset, with plenty of industry growth on the map. As a Trainee Line Mechanic, you'll work alongside experienced crews across Paeroa, and the greater Waikato region, learning the skills required to construct, maintain, inspect, and repair electrical network infrastructure. Through a combination of on-the-job training and formal study, you'll develop the technical knowledge and practical experience needed to achieve registration and become a qualified Line Mechanic. You'll play an important role in supporting the delivery of safe, reliable, and high-quality services to our customers while contributing to a strong team culture and our commitment to Zero Harm. This is a full-time, permanent opportunity, guaranteeing 40 hours per week. Excellent earning potential through paid overtime, faults response rostering, and occasional night work.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Learning the skills required to construct, maintain, and repair electrical network assets
- Completing required industry training, studies, and assessments toward qualification as a Line Mechanic
- Assisting with fault diagnosis and rectification activities under supervision
- Supporting daily field operations and project delivery across the network
- Maintaining accurate records and complete required documentation
- Working safely and contribute to Downer's Zero Harm culture
- Promoting environmentally responsible work practices and support sustainability initiatives
- Building strong working relationships with team members, supervisors, and stakeholders
About You:
- NCEA Level 2, including English, Mathematics, and at least one additional subject
- Current Class 1 driver's licence with a clean driving record – Class 2 with a WTR endorsement is a bonus
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- A commitment to workplace health, safety, and wellbeing
- The ability to learn quickly and follow instructions
- A team-focused approach with a positive attitude
- Physical fitness and the ability to perform manual work in a variety of conditions
