We're looking for an experienced Weld Shop Leading Hand to join a well-established engineering business with a strong reputation for quality heavy engineering and fabrication.

This is a hands-on leadership role suited to an experienced welder/fabricator who enjoys being on the tools while also taking responsibility for coordinating the day-to-day work of a busy weld shop.

The Role

Working alongside the workshop and engineering teams, you'll help ensure jobs are completed safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.

You'll be responsible for coordinating work on the floor, supporting the welding and fabrication team, and making sure jobs are progressing to schedule.

You'll also remain hands-on, using your own welding and fabrication skills when required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and support the day-to-day activities of the weld shop.
  • Allocate work and help prioritise jobs to meet production schedules.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to welders and fabricators.
  • Complete hands-on welding and heavy fabrication work when required.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Ensure work is completed to the required quality and customer specifications.
  • Monitor job progress and communicate any issues or delays to management.
  • Work closely with workshop, engineering and project teams.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure workshop procedures are followed.
  • Assist with problem-solving and provide practical solutions on the workshop floor.

About You

We're looking for someone who has strong hands-on experience in heavy fabrication and welding and is ready to take the next step into, or continue developing in, a leadership position.

You'll ideally have:

  • Trade qualification or equivalent experience in welding/fabrication.
  • Significant experience in heavy engineering or structural fabrication.
  • Strong MIG/MAG welding skills; other welding processes advantageous.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Experience working with heavy steel, machinery or complex fabricated components.
  • Previous Leading Hand, Senior Fabricator or supervisory experience would be advantageous.
  • Good organisational and communication skills.
  • A practical, solutions-focused approach.
  • The ability to lead by example while remaining hands-on.
