Develop and maintain Major Incident Support Team readiness and deploy at incidents

Major Incident Support Team Member

Hato Hone St John has been serving New Zealanders and working to save lives since 1885. As well as providing Ambulance Services, our programmes and team of over 11,000 staff and volunteers are helping to build strong, resilient communities across the motu; supporting everyone in Aotearoa to live healthier, happier and longer lives.

Are you looking for a way to volunteer with Hato Hone St John, but frontline ambulance work isn't for you?

Here's your opportunity!

We are looking for friendly, practical, non-clinical people to join our Major Incident Support Teams throughout New Zealand. As a MIST member, you will assist our ambulance crews and communities in a variety of ways depending on the situation. You might be helping to lift a patient, setting up at a music festival or providing support during anything from a local emergency to a national disaster. Whether it's a planned event or an unexpected crisis, you will be part of the essential support crew working behind the scenes to keep ambulance operations running smoothly and making a real difference in your community.

Responsibilities – As a MIST member your key tasks may include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining operational readiness of all MIST vehicles and equipment
  • Safely relocating and operating support, command or specialist vehicles
  • Responding to major incidents and events to undertake roles such as logistics, welfare, communications, safety or team leader

Training – All new MIST members complete an initial foundation course, which includes an induction to HHSJ, operational risk management principles and driving training. This ensures you are well-prepared to operate vehicles and equipment confidently and safely in emergency environments. "Note: The Christchurch MIST is a non-clinical role and First Responder Training is not routinely supported for this role."

As part of the recruitment journey, successful candidates must be available to attend an in-person information evening, assessment day, and an interview. The dates for these will be shared with candidates who progress through the recruitment.

Please note, only candidates who reside in the Christchurch City area will be considered for this recruitment.

To thrive in this role, you'll need to:

  • To reside in Christchurch City area to allow for appropriate response times
  • Hold a current, full, and clean New Zealand Class 1 Driver's Licence
  • Hold a Level 2 First Aid Certificate — or be willing to obtain one as part of onboarding
  • Attend at least one training session per month to maintain operational readiness
  • Be ready to deploy within 30 minutes of activation (when availability has been indicated)
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills and a keen eye for detail
  • Maintain a good level of physical fitness
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Consistently role model the core values of Hato Hone St John: Do the Right Thing, Side by Side, Straight Up, Make It Better, Open Minds
