The Salvation Army is looking for an experienced retail leader who loves variety and challenge and has the skills to manage retail operations, drive sales performance and lead a successful team.
This is a permanent, full-time role based in Christchurch, Canterbury, with 40 guaranteed hours of work per week. You may be required to work a variable roster Monday to Saturday. Please note that Family Stores operate on some public holidays, and some public holiday work may therefore be required.
The salary for this position is $66,600 – $68,200 gross per annum.
About the Family Stores:
The Salvation Army has a nationwide network of over 130 Family Stores that sell a range of quality donated goods, ranging from clothing, furniture, linen and homeware. We aren't your typical retail store, no two days are the same in terms of our customers, volume of donations received, or what you may find while processing and pricing goods to sell.
About the Role:
The Family Store Team Leader is responsible for the day-to-day management and performance of the Family Store, leading the store team to achieve operational, financial, customer service and sales outcomes in accordance with national Family Store requirements.
This is a hands-on retail management role with responsibility for the store's commercial and operational performance, including sales and financial targets, staffing, product selection and pricing, merchandising, stock presentation and the effective operation of the store.
The Team Leader also works closely with the Area Manager as part of the local area senior operational team and leads, develops and motivates employees and volunteers to deliver a positive experience for customers and donors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the day-to-day operations and performance of the Family Store, ensuring sales, financial, customer service and operational targets are achieved.
- Lead, supervise and develop store employees and volunteers, including allocating work, managing staffing and rosters, monitoring performance and supporting induction and training.
- Manage the store within its approved budget and monitor sales, revenue, margin and expenditure against agreed targets.
- Maintain appropriate cash-handling, stock and financial controls and take action to address performance variances.
- Make day-to-day decisions regarding product selection, pricing, merchandising and stock presentation within The Salvation Army's policies and guidelines.
- Oversee retail, merchandising, processing and customer-service functions to maximise stock conversion, sales and margin while maintaining a positive customer and donor experience.
- Set team priorities, performance expectations and daily operational targets and monitor achievement of those outcomes.
- Ensure the store is well presented and provides a safe and welcoming environment for employees, volunteers, customers and donors.
- Ensure compliance with The Salvation Army policies and standard operating procedures, including health and safety, HR and audit requirements.
- Work collaboratively with the Area Manager and wider Family Store team to support successful store operations.
Person Specification:
To be considered for this position, you will need:
- A relevant NZ Diploma (or equivalent relevant qualification), OR at least three years of relevant work experience in retail management.
- Demonstrated experience leading and supervising a retail team.
- Experience managing or working with sales budgets, financial targets and retail performance.
- Experience with retail operations, including stock, pricing, merchandising and customer service.
- Availability and flexibility to work a varied roster Monday to Saturday, including some public holidays as required.
- The physical capability to undertake regular lifting, which is a daily requirement of the role.
- The right to work in New Zealand.
