Lead a solicitors team to prosecute and handle complex civil and debt litigation

Inland Revenue Legal Services has an opportunity to join our Litigation team as a Technical Lead based in Wellington. This is an excellent opportunity for somebody who is passionate about legal leadership and enjoys a variety of litigation work.

Inland Revenue plays a critical role in improving the economic and social wellbeing of New Zealanders by collecting and distributing money for the Crown. Legal Services is one of the largest government in-house legal teams and forms an integral part of the 'Customer and Compliance Services – Business' unit.

The Legal Services team provides legal advice, technical support, dispute resolution and litigation services. As part of the Litigation work stream you will lead a team undertaking a variety of litigation work. This includes prosecutions, complex civil matters and debt work.

In this role you will:

  • Lead a team of around ten solicitors undertaking prosecutions, complex civil and debt work.
  • Coach, mentor and build the capability of your team members consistent with our Legal Services vision, which focuses on valuing our people, realising potential and creating an attractive place to work.
  • Provide both people and technical leadership in a fast paced and dynamic environment.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with Inland Revenue business units and with external stakeholders, including Crown Law.
  • Prioritise and allocate work based on customer priorities and your teams' capacity and capability to ensure work is delivered in a timely manner.
  • Work closely with others as a trusted business partner to achieve customer goals and manage risk for Inland Revenue.
  • Use your legal expertise and litigation experience to lead initiatives, act as a point of escalation, improve litigation practice and to develop litigation strategy to drive long term compliance.
  • Remain up to date with technology and trends and use insights and intelligence to make high-quality decisions.

The salary range for this position is $129,790 to $160,443. The successful candidate will be offered a salary within this range based on the capability and expertise they bring to the role.

The successful applicant will need to be based in Wellington.

  • Committed to leading, coaching, developing and supporting a team of solicitors.
  • Strong and current legal and litigation capability, with a desire to continuously learn and enhance your expertise.
  • Adept at managing a large team while simultaneously addressing multiple complex issues and competing priorities.
  • Proactive, motivated and solution focused to deliver good litigation outcomes that enhance the integrity of the tax system.
  • Confident relationship management skills and experience working with and getting the best from an internal team and external partners such as Crown Law.
  • Comfortable managing conflict and operating as a point of escalation.
  • Takes account of the bigger picture, customer needs and systems issues when prioritising tasks, allocating work, and offering legal and technical advice.

You must have a law degree and be eligible to hold a current New Zealand practicing certificate.
