Excavator Operator

LJ Electrical Limited provides electrical, data-cabling and construction-related services throughout Auckland and Waikato. Our team delivers electrical installations, lighting, power, data communications and associated infrastructure for projects of different sizes and complexity. Quality workmanship and workplace safety are central to our operations.

We are currently seeking to recruit one Excavator Operator to join our team. This is a full-time, permanent position based in Auckland, with work undertaken at different project sites throughout the region. The position guarantees a minimum of 30 hours per week, typically ranging from 30 to 40 hours. Work will generally be rostered from Monday to Saturday between 7:00am and 6:00pm, depending on project and site requirements. Remuneration is NZD $38.00 gross per hour.

Key responsibilities

• Operate excavators and associated attachments safely and efficiently.
• Dig trenches and pits for underground electrical cables, data cabling, conduits and related services.
• Carry out earthmoving, grading, backfilling, loading and site preparation.
• Read and follow construction drawings, site plans, levels, survey markings and work instructions.
• Identify and protect existing underground services while excavating.
• Work closely with ground crews, spotters, electricians and site supervisors.
• Complete daily pre-start inspections and basic plant maintenance.
• Report equipment faults, hazards, incidents and safety concerns promptly.
• Maintain a safe and tidy work area.
• Complete work according to project timelines, quality standards and health and safety requirements.
• Assist with related site and earthmoving duties when reasonably required.

Minimum requirements

Applicants must have:

• At least three years of relevant work experience
• A current full New Zealand Class 1 or Class 2 driver licence appropriate to the machinery operated.
• A current T endorsement for tracked excavators and/or W endorsement for wheeled machinery, as applicable.
• Practical knowledge of excavator controls, attachments, pre-start inspections and routine plant maintenance.
• The ability to interpret construction drawings, site plans, survey markings and underground-service markings.
• A strong understanding of excavation hazards and safe-digging procedures.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work safely with ground crews and other trades.
• A reliable and responsible approach to work.
