About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our Point of Care team. You will perform technical and operational duties normally expected of a Medical Laboratory Scientist including the documentation, processing, and reporting of patient specimens.

The role is based at Whangarei Hospital but also includes duties in the Rural Hospitals in Northland. The successful candidate will assist with the development and implementation of the Point-of-Care Testing programme for the HNZ Northland District, to achieve the objectives required by ISO 15189:2022 and the New Zealand Best Practice Guidelines for Point-of-Care Testing 2025.

Responsibilities include:

• Carry out quality assurance procedures, monitoring of POCT devices, training and on-going certification of nursing, midwifery, allied health and medical staff in the operation of POCT devices.
• In conjunction with the POCT Coordinator, develop and implement procedures testing systems relating to POCT.
• Liaise with the POCT Coordinator, POCT Pathologists, Clinical Director, Pathology Services Manager with regard to resource utilisation.
• Working with the Pathology Services Manager and POCT Coordinator, identify, maintain and monitor all POCT equipment, middleware and connectivity systems. Will up skill where necessary, train and support the users of POCT equipment and where required evaluate performance.

About you you will need:

• New Zealand Registered and Licenced Medical Laboratory Scientist with a current APC
• Computer literacy: Word, Excel, Outlook and relevant clinical programs and middleware systems
• Extensive skills, knowledge & experience in a medical biochemistry, haematology or microbiology department.
• In depth knowledge and experience of laboratory information and middleware systems
• Experience with staff training in a Pathology discipline

Desirable

• At least 5 years experience in a variety of areas within Pathology Services or Point of Care Testing
• Evidence of advanced skills in relevant areas
• Evidence of advanced skills in POCT middleware and connectivity systems
• Experience in training of non-laboratory staff
• Experience in student supervision and training
