Health Promotion Advisor - Timaru - NPHS

Contribute to transforming the future of health in this Health Promotion Advisor role. Permanent, part-time (0.5 FTE) role based in Timaru.

About the Role

The primary purpose of a Health Promoter is to design, develop, enable and evaluate health promotion projects, strategies, policies, interventions and initiatives that address determinants of health and wellbeing – aligned with community and government priorities. Partnering across community and policy settings, you'll drive collective action, cross-sector collaboration, and local planning to improve environments for hauora.

Based in the Community and Whānau Wellbeing team, you'll help strengthen community capability and voice, influencing policy and creating supportive environments that enable whānau and communities to thrive. The role also contributes knowledge, expertise and ideas to local, regional and national teams and programmes of work.

About the Service

The National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora, work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures) for all by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, promotion, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.

About you

You are a strong relationship builder and facilitator who works confidently across communities, organisations, and systems. With a solid understanding of public health and the wider determinants of health, you use evidence, data, and community insight to inform your work. You communicate clearly, adapt to different audiences, and are committed to advancing equity through Te Tiriti o Waitangi in practice.

You're comfortable navigating complex stakeholder environments, working alongside local government, iwi and hapū, and communities to enable collective action and influence policy and planning. You're proactive, adaptable, and able to lead work that delivers meaningful outcomes.

  • Experience in health promotion, community development, or a related field
  • Ability to apply Te Tiriti o Waitangi in practice
  • Understanding of health promotion in the Aotearoa New Zealand context, including, Māori models of health, the Ottawa Charter and the determinants of health
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate programs towards achieving pae ora
  • A deep understanding of the systems, structures, policies and legislations that can impact health
  • Full New Zealand Drivers' License
