About the position

Orchid Valley Limited is seeking a reliable and hardworking Nursery Person to join our plant production and nursery operation in Bombay, Auckland.

This is a full-time, permanent, year-round position involving the ongoing care, propagation, maintenance and production of plants within the company's nursery and growing facilities.

The successful applicant will be involved in the day-to-day operation of the nursery throughout the year and will assist with maintaining healthy plant growth, preparing growing areas, propagation, planting, irrigation and general nursery operations.

Key responsibilities

  • propagation and production of plants throughout the year.

  • Prepare growing media, containers, planting areas and nursery facilities.

  • Plant, transplant, pot and space plants according to production requirements.

  • Water and irrigate plants and monitor irrigation systems.

  • Monitor plant health and identify signs of pests, disease, nutrient deficiency or plant stress.

  • Carry out pruning, trimming, staking, thinning, weeding and other plant maintenance activities.

  • Apply fertilisers and approved plant treatments in accordance with instructions and workplace procedures.

  • Maintain nursery plants and growing areas to the required production standards.

  • Assist with routine greenhouse and nursery maintenance.

  • Inspect plants and remove damaged or unsuitable plants where required.

  • Sort, grade, label and prepare plants and produce for internal use, sale or distribution.

  • Maintain nursery tools, equipment and work areas in a clean and safe condition.

  •  receiving, storing and moving plants, growing media, fertiliser, equipment and other supplies.

  • advising customers on plant care and appropriate plants for local conditions
  • budding and grafting vegetative material onto root stock
  • Maintain basic production and plant-care records as required.

  • Follow all workplace health and safety procedures.

  • Perform other general nursery and plant-production duties reasonably required as part of the ongoing operation of the business.

Skills and experience

  • Previous experience in nursery work, horticulture, plant production, greenhouse operations or a relevant qualification

  •  knowledge of plant care, propagation, irrigation and plant maintenance.

  • Ability to identify common plant health issues is an advantage.

  • Good physical fitness and ability to undertake manual work.

  • Ability to work effectively in greenhouse and outdoor growing environments.

  • Good attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.

  • Reliable, punctual and able to work as part of a team.

  • A full New Zealand driver's licence is an advantage but not essential.

Employment conditions

  • Work is available throughout the year, subject to normal business requirements.

  • This is an ongoing position and is not limited to a particular crop, harvest, season or seasonal peak.
