Child and Adolescent Specialist Mental Health Service Hub

The Child and Adolescent Specialist Mental Health Service in Dunedin is seeking 5 fulltime psychology interns for an intern hub. The hub provides a comprehensive internship experience with the opportunity to work within a variety of multi-disciplinary services co-located in Dunedin:

  • Dunedin Child and Family service (up to 14 years of age)
  • Youth Specialty Services (14-19) Youth Forensic Service
  • Rāpoi Youth Day Programme

In addition, we have Child and Youth Mental Health Services in the rural areas of Waitaki, Clutha, Central Lakes, and Dunstan.

All services provide specialist mental health care to rangatahi and their families experiencing moderate to severe mental health challenges. Our multi-disciplinary teams include psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, drug and alcohol counsellors, occupational therapists, and social workers. We provide specialist assessment, formulation, and treatment for a range of mental health difficulties, plus specialist assessment for neurodevelopmental disorders (IDD, ADHD, ASD).

In addition to working with children and youth there will be opportunities to work within the adult mental health space in our teams in Clutha and Waitaki.

About the role

The primary purpose of the role is to:

Under the guidance of their supervisor, to provide high-quality clinical psychology service in the assessment and treatment of clients, ensuring clients' needs are met in a culturally, clinically and legally safe manner. The intern psychologist functions as part of multidisciplinary teams in addition to being co-located with other interns in the hub.

Clinical psychology is a discipline integrating science, theory, and clinical knowledge for the purpose of understanding, preventing and relieving psychologically based distress or dysfunction and to promote subjective wellbeing and personal development. Psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioural disorders. Clinical psychologists use the science of psychology to treat complex human problems and promote change. They develop an individual's resilience using strengths-based models.

About you

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in psychology or equivalent*
  • Currently registered as part of Doctoral or Masters' level vocational training in psychology
  • Registration with NZ Psychologist Board, with Intern Psychologist Scope of Practice
  • Current annual practising certificate.
  • Understanding of mental health in infants, children, adolescents, adults and their families
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Working in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Can use Microsoft Office suite (Word and Excel)
  • Can keep detailed written file notes, complete client pathway documentation and provide formal assessment reports as required.
