Te Toki Maurere is the Pakeke Adult Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit at Whakatane Hospital. We provide specialist inpatient mental health and addiction care for tangata whaiora experiencing acute distress, working closely with whanau, community teams, cultural supports, and the wider multidisciplinary team.

Our vision is to strengthen safe, culturally grounded, trauma-informed, recovery-focused, and least restrictive care. We are continuing to develop a ward culture where clinical skill, Te Ao Maori perspectives, relational practice, staff wellbeing, and practical innovation work together to improve outcomes for tangata whaiora and whanau.

This is an opportunity to contribute to a ward that is actively strengthening its model of care, supporting new and developing nurses, and building sustainable clinical leadership within the inpatient environment.

About the Role

We are seeking a registered nurse with a passion for mental health and a commitment to holistic, person and whānau-centred care.

Kaupapa Māori nursing care Apply Te Ao Māori concepts and practices in clinical care, promoting culturally safe recovery pathways for tangata whaiora.

Person-centred care Support pakeke (adults) experiencing psychological distress by completing mental state assessments, establishing therapeutic engagement, applying trauma-informed, least restrictive approaches and managing medication and physical health.

Multidisciplinary teamwork Work alongside nurses, kaupapa Māori nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, pharmacists, medical house officers, Pou Kōkiri (cultural advisors) and our consumer peer support lived experience (CPSLE) partners.

Professional Growth opportunities for post graduate study, mentoring, clinical supervision and ongoing development, with a strong focus on wellbeing, wairuatanga and workforce capability

Cultural leadership Champion Toi Ora knowledge and competence, embed He Pou Oranga Tangata Whenua and Hauora ā Toi Ki Manaakitanga values, and advocate for equity in Māori health outcomes.

About you

We are looking for a registered nurse who:

Has a passion for mental health nursing and a making meaningful difference for tangata whaiora and whānau

Demonstrates respect and advocates for a te Ao Māori worldview, cultural safety, and equitable practice

Actively upholds the principles of Te Tiriti ō Waitangi in clinical care

Communicates effectively and contributes positively to the multidisciplinary team

Is motivated to improve health outcomes and enhance the wellbeing of Māori and all tangata whaiora

Current Nursing Registration and Annual Practicing Certificate

Mental Health included in your Scope of Practice

NZ Police Safety Check Clearance and Health Clearance

Completion of a safety check as required by the Childrens Act 2014 And the Childrens (Requirements for Safety Checks Of Childrens Workers) Regulations 2015
